Appointment is subject to satisfactory working rights in Australia All YWCA Canberra policies and procedures will apply Subject to a 6 month probation period Position Statement The Cook is responsible to the Director of the Program for the provision of nutritious meals and snacks at the program including: Ensuring children’s daily nutritional needs, food preferences and cultural, religious or special dietary requirements are met. All food handling and storage procedures set out by recognised authorities are adhered to. All YWCA policies and procedures relevant to nutrition, food handling and storage, health and safety, and more generally Children’s Services and the YWCA of Canberra are adhered to. Form: Steward: People and Capability Manager Review Date: Approved By: Executive Director Position Description Responsibilities This position includes the following duties that applicants need to be aware of when assessing their ability to perform these duties. The role may include (this is not an exhaustive list): Periods of standing Hands frequently in contact with water and detergent Carrying of groceries, pushing trolley Key Relationships Director of the program Staff working in the program Children at the program Families using the service External agencies that resource and inform best practice food handling, storage and preparation of food Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to: Food Purchasing Order and purchase all food requirements for the program. Check accuracy of food deliveries to the program. Duties Food Preparation Prepare nutritionally balanced, appetising meals and snacks on a daily basis. Prepare and serve meals in a timely manner, in consultation with room staff. Maintain appropriate food safety and hygiene practices. Menu planning Effective and efficient meal preparation, serving and cleaning up. Fortnightly menu displayed inviting feedback and comment. Provide an interesting and varied menu for the various age ranges of children. Planning menus for food intolerance, allergies, cultural and religious considerations. Cleaning Maintain a clean, hygienic and safe environment, ensuring all food safety regulations and organisational requirements are met. Ensure kitchen is thoroughly cleaned each day including dishes, bench tops, and spills. Regular cleaning of kitchen appliances and storage areas, including. stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, cupboards. Consider nutritional requirements of children when planning menus. Consider comments, feedback and suggestions when planning menus. Assist room staff with food service and clean up. Informing best practice procedures for food purchasing, preparation, and storage. Selection Criteria Qualifications Knowledge and Experience Current Food Safety Supervisor Certificate or willingness to obtain within three months of commencement. Experience in planning and preparing menus for children aged 6 weeks to six years. Ability to produce an appropriate, appetising and varied menu. The ability to account for specific restrictions in children’s dietary requirements. Evidence of understanding the nutritional requirements of young children. Evidence of ability to relate well to children. Ability to work well as a member of a team. Capabilities and Behaviours Evidence of ability to time manage the preparation and serving of meals and snacks. Ability to order and purchase necessary food within menu and budget guidelines.
