Job Description
Post Title: Family Support Worker

Responsible to: CYP Manager
Salary: £17,860.25
Hours: 37 hours per week
Duration: Fixed term contract until 31st March 2015
Spark Blaenymaes Ltd is a local charity based in the community of Blaenymaes and
Portmead. The let’s play project provides families with children 0-4 play opportunities
in their local community. The project aims to stimulate early learning and health
development using a variety of means, whilst encouraging parents to take an active
role in the development of their child. As a family support worker you will work with
the family delivering a holistic family programme.
In addition Spark runs a variety of projects aimed at helping local people to reach
their full potential.
Job Description Main tasks
The Family support worker has these main duties:
 Pop in and Play - To deliver Home based Individual play sessions for families
to support development and learning, preparing play sessions and managing
resources.
 To support parents to build on their strengths and improve their parenting
capacity.
 To empower parents/carers to engage with their children in order to promote
holistic child development especially speech and language and learning
through play
 The running of our Sparklers playgroups in various settings.
 The running Stay and play sessions in various settings.
 To advocate on behalf of families with other agencies and make referrals.
 Working closely with other agencies in a multi agency approach.
 To keep records up to date and to monitor children’s progress.
 Respond to family/children’s need.
 To work co-operatively with other Spark projects.
 To support play assistants and volunteers.
 To facilitate Play Activities in the community, trips and special events
 To carry out risk assessments.
 To undertake staff training when appropriate.
 To attend staff meetings and participate in regular supervisions.
 Present a positive role model to parents and carers in groups and individual
work.
 To be aware of and implement all Spark’s policies and procedures in particular
health and safety, child protection.
 Be aware of Spark’s equal opportunities policy and carry out duties in the
spirit of the policy at all times.
 To help keep the project’s base well organised and resources safe, clean and
well stocked.
 To be flexible and able to work some evenings and weekends.
 Any other duties deemed necessary by your line manager.
Personnel Specification
Essential
 Qualification and experience in early year’s childcare and education or NVQ 3
or equivalent.
 The ability to write concise and accurate reports with regards to families, i.e
TAF, Social Services.
 To have the ability to communicate effectively from a wide range of
backgrounds both verbal and written.
 The ability to prioritise workloads and work effectively under a number of
different pressures.
 A good understanding of the development needs of children 0-4 and the ability
to provide innovative and appropriate activities to stimulate learning and
development needs.
 Have a good understanding of child protection issues, confidentiality, health
and safety.
 Experience of providing play for children and their families in a variety of
settings.
 The ability to enthuse and motivate parents.
 Ability to network and act on opportunities.
 Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
 Ability to prioritise work with other team members and to work unsupervised.
 Experience of working in an area with similar social deprivation.
 Hold a current and full driving licence and have use of a car.
 Show a desire to be involved in an exciting project where ingenuity,
adaptability, flexibility and stick ability will be essential traits.
 Have a good sense of humour!
Desirable
 Hold a first Aid certificate.
