TREES and SHRUBS
CANNAN FIR - Moist to medium soils, full sun. Height 30'-70'. Needles are 3/4-1.5" long and are lustrous dark
green to bluish green with silvery stomatic bands on the underside of the needles. More resistant to spring
frost injury than either Fraser or Balsam fir because of its tendency to break bud late. Makes a good Christmas
tree.
NORWAY(RED PINE) - Medium to dry soils, full sun. Height up to 100'. Needles 4.5" to 6.5 " long and twp to a
cluster, Loses its lower limbs early. The bark of the red pine is flaky and orange-red in color. Grow very rapidly
for their first 60 or 70 years. Is a good timber-producing tree. A reliable transplant.
WHITE PINE - Moist to dry soils, somewhat shade tolerant. Height 80'. Needles are 4" to 6" long and five to a
cluster. The ease of transplanting and rapid growth of the White Pine tree makes it ideal for windscreen.
WHITE SPRUCE - Moist to dry soils, does well in full sun. Height 40'- 60'. Needles are four-sided, crowded along
branchlets; length 1/3" to 3/4"; dark bluish-green. Besides providing nesting sites and shelter, provides food
for many kinds of wildlife. Pyramidal, makes a good screen.
NORWAY SPRUCE - Moist to medium soils, prefers full sun. Height 40'-60'. Cone is 4"-6" long , Medium to fast
growing, Needles; 1/2" to 1" long, squarish with a nice dark green color, branches have a pendulous habit.
COLORADO BLUE SPRUCE - Dry, well-drained soils. Height 30'-50', Sharp pointed needles, green to blue color.
Extremely hardy and adaptable to a variety of conditions. Drought-tolerant once established, and will thrive in
partial to full sun. Excellent for windbreaks, ornamental, or Christmas trees.
PAPER BIRCH - Moist to dry soils ,full/partial sun. Height 60'-70'. White bark that peels off in strips; easy to
transplant; casts light shade; shallow roots. Rich yellow to golden yellow fall color.
CRANBERRY BUSH- Moist to medium soils, Full sun to part shade, 8-12', Maple-like haped leaves. Showy
snow-white flowers, bright red fruit persists into winter. Excellent fall foliage color: yellow, red, orange, or
burgundy.
RED CRABAPPLE - Medium to wet soils, full sun. Height 20'-30'. Flower buds emerge rose red and open pink to
rose pink and bloom heavily only every other year. Outstanding features are the tree's almost complete disease
resistance and its small red fruit, 1cm in diameter, that cling to the trees all winter. The flowering crabapple are
a durable and highly useful ornamental trees that are strikingly beautiful in bloom.
RED-OSIER DOGWOOD - Moist to wet soils, part shade. Height: 6'-9'. Stems turn a yellow-green in the spring
changing to a very colorful coral-red from November through March. Dark green leaves turn a purplish-red in
the fall. White flowers appear in late May, with white fruit borne in August-September which attracts birds.
SERVICEBERRY (JUNEBERRY) - Medium to well-drained soil, full sun/part shade. Height 8'-15'. Large shrub with
beautiful fall colors. White spring flowers giving way to 0.3" fruit loved by birds. Berries resemble blueberries in
size and color and are often used in jams, jellies and pies.

If you are interested in restoring a prairie, lakeshore habitats or want to garden with super-hardy, droughttolerant and pest-resistant native perennials that will handle plenty of neglect while providing loads of flowers
that will attract bees, butterflies and birds throughout the summer, then one or more of these collections are
for you.

The perfect mix of colorful wildflowers and beautiful grasses to stabilize shorelines, improve lake health, or
replace wet areas of lawn that are dificult to mow.
