Media men’s Visits to the Industrial Establishment to be
acquainted with the efforts exerted in Industrial pollution
Abatement
In the framework of the recommendations resulted from the
workshop “The Role of media in promoting Awareness about Industrial
pollution, its sources, impacts and methods of abatement” held in Sharm
El-Sheikh from 11th to 14th of last may, Industrial pollution Abatement
project (IPAP) in EEAA, financed by the Finnish government, organized
field visits to six industrial companies in different cities.
The target of such visits was to provide media men with the
opportunity to know closely different industries, technologies, industry’s
vision of Industrial pollution problem and the efforts exerted to comply
with environmental law. The visits aimed also at specifying the problems
that impede their way to achieve that in addition to inspecting some clean
technology models being used by Egyptian industry.
The media men visited six industrial big companies: Abu Qir
industrial fertilizers company in Alexandria, El-Ezz steel in sadat city,
Egyptian copper company in Alexandria, Paints and Chemical Industries
(PACIN) in Al-obour city, Edfina Preserved Food Stuff company in
Alexandria and Tanta Oil and Soap company.
Each visit started with organizing a meeting between media men
and the directors of the sectors in these companies who explained in

details the environmental problems they are facing in the procedures they
took in order to comply with environmental law No.4 of 1994.
They also talked about the support introduced by EEAA
represented in IPAP for some of these companies to adjust their positions
through soft financing packages. Such aid was presented to implement
some environmental projects. On the other hand, media men acquainted
closely with management methods of various production processes in the
six factories and the technologies used which versified from the old and
state-of-the art technology known as cleaner technology. They acquainted
also with the industrial companies benefited from such financing
packages provided by IPAP to adjust their stands. Amongst these
companies is Abu Qir for fertilizers in Alexandria which has
implemented a project to decrease nitrogen oxide emissions in Acid
factory to reach 20ppm instead of 150ppm. The actual operation of the
unit began in March 2000 with a soft grant estimated by $1,007 million
from the World Bank through IPAP. The total environmental investments
in the company reached LE 34,600 million.
Media men visited also Paints and Chemical Industries company
(PACIN) in Al-Obour city as another example of the companies received
a support from IPAP. PACIN has implemented a project of solvents
Recovery in washing units of suspended paints factory at the value of LE
228,875. 25% of the value of this unit was financed by a grant from
German Construction Bank through IPAP, through the same grant at the
value of LE 436,051.
