- Civilization in Egypt began about 3100 B.C.E, not long after it began in
Mesopotamia.
- Like Mesopotamia, Egypt developed around a great river system.
- Egyptian civilization had its humble beginnings as a scattering of villages
and settlements stretching along the mighty Nile River.
To the Egyptians, the Nile was a lifeline. It provided:
•
water for both irrigation and drinking
•
a natural highway to link their communities
•
Food sources
•
silt for their fields
The Nile is the longest river on earth. It runs over 6400 km from its source in the heart of Africa to its
mouth in the Mediterranean.
- Most Egyptians had little contact with the world beyond the river, for travel in the desert was
hazardous
