Non-Native Species Brochure The introduction of non-native species to marine ecosystems is an ongoing problem. Sources of these species include the release of ballast water, transport on boat hulls, hitching a ride on shellfish, escape from aquaculture facilities, and intentional releases. These invasive species are the second greatest cause (after habitat destruction) of species endangerment and global biodiversity loss. Threatened and endangered species are often at risk because of competition and predation from invasive species. Invasive species may also physically damage habitats. Research one invasive species that is common in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (our Pacific coast). Address the following in your brochure: Include the following on your informational brochure: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 8. Common name Genus and species Photos of the organisms Native range and locations where and how it has expanded (include a map) Habitat (bays, estuaries, hard substrate, mud, etc.) – include photos Information on its life history (reproduction, diet, predators) Damage it causes (other organisms, habitat, water quality) Method of dispersal What can be done to mitigate damage from it? Use the following web sites to start your research. Use others but make sure that they are legitimate sites (e.g., universities, museums, government agencies). Create your tri-fold brochure using an 8.5” x 11” piece of paper. It must be typed and printed. No hand written text.
