Probability Genetics practice Questions
Directions:
-READ 14.2 write a summary about to apply the rules of probability to solving genetics problems.
-Then for each of the probability problems below show ALL your work and BOX your answer.
Rule of Multiplication – The probability that
independent events will happen simultaneously is the
product of their individual probabilities.
Rule of Addition – The probability of an event that can
occur in two or more independent ways is the sum of
the separate probabilities of the different ways.
A list of traits and Dominance or Recessiveness.
Height of plant-Tall or short = Tall Dominant
Pod Color-Green or Yellow =Green Dominant
Seed Texture- Smooth or Wrinkled = Smooth Dominant
Seed Color-Green or Yellow = Yellow Dominant
1. Use the rule of multiplication to find out the probability of having a short plant
if both parents are carriers for short.
2. Use the rule of multiplication and addition to find out the probability of having
a HETEROZYGOUS TALL plant if both parents are carriers for short.
3. Use the rule of multiplication and addition to find out the probability of having a plant with a TALL phenotype if
both parents are carriers for short.
4. Use the rule of multiplication and addition to find out the
probability of having a wrinkled peas if one parent is wrinkled and
the other parent is a carrier of the wrinkled trait.
5. Use the rule of multiplication and addition to find out the
probability of having a SMOOTH phenotype if one parent is
wrinkled and the other parent is a carrier of the wrinkled trait.
6. You flip a penny 3 times, what is the probability that you will flip
just one heads? Use the rule of multiplication and addition and
SHOW your work. (Use the image to check your answer.)
Example of how to solve probability when dealing with 2 different genes.
H is dominate for long hair (h = short) and B is dominate for black eyes
(b = red eyes). If the parents are...HhBb x hhBb
How many off the offspring will be short haired and red
eyed?
7. Use the rules of multiplication to find out the probability of
an offspring from the above example being long haired and
having black eyes.
8. Use the rule of multiplication to find out the probability of a pea plant to be green and wrinkled if both parents are
yellow and smooth (heterozygous)
9. Human skin pigmentation is controlled by at least 3 separate genes. Let’s consider 3 genes, with a dark skin allele for
each gene being dominant (A, B, and C). If both parents are heterozygous for each gene (AaBbCc), use the rule of
multiplication to calculate the probability that their baby would have the darkest skin color of AABBCC.
