JERSEY FRESHWATER ANGLING ASSOCIATION
2009 TROUT SEASON REPORT
Another season over and for some who braved the last couple of months it was disappointing however the numbers speak for themselves. We
only asked members to report fish caught and killed from the boats, so the numbers below reflect a direct comparison with the 2008 season. The
average total catch at Queens Valley per return was higher than 2008 with the Val De La Mare catch being slightly lower. There were far fewer
boats fished at Queens Valley 320 compared to 444 in the previous season, we can put this down to weather conditions and water levels from
July onwards with virtually no boats being taken out in October and November. Val De La Mare anglers tend to be a hardier lot with boat
numbers being virtually the same as the previous year. Those anglers who were prepared to try different methods still caught fish and looking at
the early returns when we launched catch and release some anglers could have filled their bags many times over had they been permitted to kill
all the fish caught. Catch and release seems to have worked well with all anglers showing due respect for the fish, we had no reports of bad
handling or dead fish, the Committee extends a big thank you to all members for sticking to the guidelines, we hope to continue with catch and
release for 2010. Returns will be changed for 2010 so that the Committee can gather more data to help with the management of fish stocks. As
the outgoing trout representative on the Committee I would like to thank the trout members for their diligence in filling in returns and ask you to
continue doing so in the future to aid management of stocks. Please contact a member of the Committee if you have any problems or issues, do
not write it on the returns as these may not be seen for a while and no immediate action taken. The loss of Grand Vaux has been a blow to some
of our members however this should result in more fish stocks being available for the two remaining waters in 2010 and with a combination of
catch and release should improve fishing in the future.

Serge Le Moeligou
