www.candlestickconnect.org Local Plants, Local People Live Forever Dudleya farinose This drought-­‐tolerant coastal succulent grows well in sandy/rocky soils. This plant grows well in moist soils and is a good host plant for a range of butterflies. California Buttercup Ranunculus californicus This plant is pollinated by insects and grows in a variety of soil types. It is poisonous except for the seeds. Douglas Iris Iris douglasiana Arroyo Willow Salix lasiolepis This drought-­‐tolerant, rapidly spreading plant grows well in slightly acidic, well-­‐
draining soils. Pearly Everlasting Anaphalis margaritacea prefers This perennial dry, sunny climates. Young leaves are edible when cooked. Candlestick Point Native Plant N ursery grows 20,000 native plants annually, which support partners, agencies, and individuals to realize their large and small scale efforts to cultivate sustainable native plant habitats. Sustainability involves not only t he plants, however; it involves people like you – thoughtful stewards. Recognizing that everyone has a role in a sustainable future, our nursery employs local teens and engages local residents in the process of growing plants and restoring local habitats. As a program of L iteracy for Environmental Justice, the nursery helps sustain ongoing urban greening, eco-­‐literacy, community stewardship, and workforce development opportunities in Southeast San Francisco. While we carry many plants at a ny given time, the following comprise a short list of native plants that are regularly in stock: § Blue Blossom (Ceanothus thrysiflorus) § Blue Eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium bellum) § California Sagebrush (Artemesia californica) § Coast Buckwheat (Eriogonum latifolium) § Coast Daisy (Erigeron glaucus) § Coyote Mint (Monardella villosa) § Purple Needlegrass (Stipa pulchra) § Red Fescue (Festuca rubra) § Sticky Monkeyflower (Mimulus aurantiacus) § Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) § Varied Lupine (Lupinus variicolor) § Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) Checker Bloom Sidalcea malviflora This perennial herb with edible leaves grows well in sand, clay and serpentine soils. We’re Expanding! As part of a $1M Urban Greening Grant for restoration at Candlestick Point State be expanding Recreation Area, our nursery will in coming years to 3-­‐4 times its current size!
