See below for the list of advantages. Social: Ayia Napa now has a better transport system than it had in years passed. Tourists to the area wanted more transport links to the rest of Cyprus so they can explore other parts of the island. This now means that inhabitants of Ayia Napa can now tra vel better around Cyprus. Economic: Ayia Napa's GDP has grown due to the tourism industry. It is now estimated that 20% of the GDP comes from that industry. Environmental: Ayia Napa now has a number of protected beaches and areas of water that allow turtles to lay their eggs. For the reason why the government has decided to do this please see 'Disadvantages' Disadvantages Of Tourism For Ayia Napa Ayia Napa is a popular tourist destination for families, young couples, teenagers on their gap year etc. This tourism industry brings both advantages and disadvantages to Ayia Napa. See below for the list of Disadvantages. Social: The original inhabitants of Ayia Napa have now moved away to quiet areas, such as small villages in the mountains, to get away from the anti-social behaviour and the nightlife etc. Environmental/Social: Turtles that live in the waters around Ayia Napa are being scared away and forced away from the beaches. One reason for this is that there is an increased level of activity on the beaches and in the see, this means that the turtles cannot peacefully lay there eggs there. Another reason for this is that because Ayia Napa is an old town, their sewage system is not designed to cope with all the extra waste coming from the tourists. Therefore sewage is leaked into the sea and the turtles cannot access the beach due to the polluted water. To see what the government have done to combat this please see 'Advantages'. Social/Economic: Agriculture in Ayia Napa has suffered dramatically due to the incr ease in the size of the tourism industry. Young people, who would normally have gone to work in the agriculture sector, are now opting out of the 'farmer lifestyle' in favour of working in clubs, bars, hotels etc. This then means that the amount of locally grown food in Ayia Napa has dropped significantly. Also this then means that less money is generated. www.ayianapageography.yolasite.com Social/Economic: Due the fact that people tend to holiday in the summer but not in the winter a lot of holiday resorts are open in summer but not in wint er. This then means that a lot of employment in the tourism industry is 'seasonal'. This then in turn increases the amount of unemployed people in Ayia Napa in the winter months. Social: Antisocial behaviour is on the rise in Ayia Napa and it is becoming a greater concern for the local police and residents. Tourists from across the world 'flock' to Ayia Napa in the summer because of its night life. This then in turn means that a lot of tourists get very intoxicated and cannot control themselves. Tourists have been known to urinate, vomit, fight and be a general nuisance in public.
