The Ministry of Forests and Range invites you to a seminar on “Ecological sustainability of forest biomass harvesting” Dr. Shannon M. Berch Research Scientist, Soils Program June 16, 2010 11:00 am to 12:00 noon Victoria location: Room 201 – 727 Fisgard Street Conference call: 1 888-789-9572 Conference ID: 7570203 Abstract Although for many people questions and concerns remain about its ecological sustainability, the forest biomass harvesting industry in British Columbia is moving ahead under the umbrella of the BC Energy Plan. In this seminar, I will explore some of the concerns, risks, and mitigation options for maintaining site productivity and biodiversity and providing the foundation for ecologically-sustainable forest biomass harvesting operations. The recent joint IEA Task 43 – Long Term Soil Productivity international workshop held in Kamloops on "Sustainability across the supply chain of land-based biomass" provided a successful venue for communications between operational and stewardship researchers and policy makers. During this seminar, I will also discuss some of the international programs for the development of criteria and indicators and the harmonization of forest energy terminology and methods described at this workshop. Bio Shannon Berch is a research scientist with the British Columbia Ministry of Forests and Range, specializing in soil biology and mycological non-timber forest products. She has been with the Ministry for 17 years and is adjunct professor with the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at UBC and with the Centre for Non-Timber Resources at Royal Roads University.
