Directions: Use the following information to write a conclusion for your
scientific investigation.
Tia and Mike wondered if the type of fertilizer (no fertilizer, compost or
chemical) affects the growth of a rose. They set up an experiment to test their
theory.
Question: What is the effect on different fertilizers, (no fertilizer, compost
fertilizer, chemical fertilizer) on the growth of roses?
Prediction: The rose receiving chemical fertilizer would grow the tallest.
Materials:
Soil
3 pots (each 12 inches in diameter)
3 rose plants
Water
Beaker
Measuring cup
Compost
Chemical fertilizer

Fill each container with the same amount of soil and plant a rose in each.
Place all roses in direct sunlight as show in the experiment setup.
Measure and record the starting height of each rose.
Give one rose no fertilizer, the second rose 1 cup of compost fertilizer and the last rose 1
cup of chemical fertilizer.
5. Give each rose plant two cups of water.
6. After one week measure and record the height of each plant and record the data in your
scientific journal.
7. Repeat steps 4-6 two more times.
