Chapter 4 Study Guide
This will consist only of written answers to questions on the exam. There is no
listening component. You will need to be familiar with definitions and letter
abbreviations.
Form – the structure, plan, framework of music
Outer form – the technical structure a piece of music employs, such as variation
Inner form – the personal choices a composer makes within the outer form that
give a work its unique sound quality
Repetition – AAA; strophic form (like a hymn)
Contrast – AB (binary form); through-composed (no repetition) might look like
ABCDE etc.
Contrast & Return – ABA; also known as rounded binary, ternary; da capo aria
ABA’; ABACA etc. is known as rondo form
Variation – AA1A2A3A4 etc.
Genre – refers to general categories determined by text, style, function and
performing forces; includes symphony, opera, string quartet, concerto, solo
song. Within a genre, various form structures can be used.
Style – distinctive, characteristic uses of musical elements and structures. Can be
categorized by historical cultures (Renaissance, Baroque, Classical,
Romantic), geography (African, European, Chinese, American), as well as
other modern distinctions (pop, rock, heavy metal, hip hop, rap, etc.). Style
is useful to create relationships amongst works of music. Works within a
style share similar characteristics pertaining to musical elements.
