Objective: Know how respiration in animals is a process that converts
(changes) food energy into mechanical and heat energy.
Plants capture and store energy by photosynthesis and animals capture and
store energy by eating other things. The energy is stored until it’s needed.
The glucose (sugar) in the cells of animals comes from the food they
consume. When this happens the cells obtain energy from glucose (sugar).
When oxygen diffuses the cells by breathing, a chemical reaction results
called Respiration.
During respiration, cells break down simple food molecules such as glucose
(sugar) and release the energy they contain along with carbon dioxide and
water. The food (chemical energy) is converted to mechanical energy
(energy used to perform work) and heat energy (heat to keep the body
warm).
Respiration Equation (Know This!)
C6H12O6 + 6 O2  6 CO2 + 6 H2O + energy (mechanical + heat)
The photosynthesis equation and respiration equation are showing an
opposite process.
