In a test conducted by the Center for Irrigation Technology (CIT), California State University in Fresno, California, results show that Certa-Set™, an above ground portable piping system, significantly reduces water loss when tested against conventional aluminum irrigation piping. CIT results showed that Certa-Set's operating efficiency was nearly 95 percent. Standard aluminum irrigation pipe has an average operating efficiency of 86 percent. The CertainTeed Certa-Set piping system reduces total water loss by 62 percent. Reducing water loss will be a tremendous benefit to the row crop and turf grass growers who are competing with urban development for limited water resources. Certa-Set's reduced water loss can be attributed to a watertight hydraulic pressure seal where pipe laterals connect to the CertainTeed patented sled coupling. According to Edward Norum, P.E. and Agricultural Engineer at CIT, the operating efficiency of Certa-Set results in the actual 62 percent reduction in total water loss. “This represents a significant savings to the grower,” says Norum. Certa-Set was developed in conjunction with Golden State Irrigation, an exclusive CertainTeed pipe distributor with several locations in the in the west. CertainTeed's Certa-Lok™ Yelomine Pipe also performed remarkably well in a test conducted by Hauser Laboratories, a testing laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. The test, which used thirteen-year-old 8” Certa-Lok Yelomine Pipe, illustrated that Certa-Lok still passed original manufacturer's specifications even after prolonged exposure to fertilizers, fungicides and intense ultraviolet sunlight. Certa-Lok Yelomine pipe can be used for a broad range of piping applications including mining and industrial and can be used in above ground or exposed applications as well as underground applications. CertainTeed's irrigation piping systems are manufactured from polyvinyl chloride and will not pit or corrode like aluminum pipe can. “Growers who use CertainTeed's irrigation piping system don't need to worry about the effects of corrosion on their irrigation system,” says John Schultz, Yelomine marketing manager for CertainTeed's Pipe and Plastics Group. In addition, the resin compound used for Certa-Set and Certa-Lok pipe is specially formulated with ultraviolet inhibitors and impact modifiers to reduce the harmful effects of prolonged sunlight exposure.
