The properly balanced equation for the production of carbon dioxide is
C + O2  CO2
12 + 32  44
Since carbon has an atomic mass of 12 amu, and each diatomic
oxygen molecule has an atomic mass of 16 X 2 amu = 32 amu,
we can calculate the relative mass of carbon, oxygen, and
carbon dioxide as:
The ratios are the same for any unit, amu, gram, pound, or ton.
This means that for every 12 tons of carbon we burn, whether from coal, wood, gasoline, jet fuel, or
diesel, we use up 32 tons of oxygen, and put into our atmosphere 44 tons of carbon dioxide.
Miami-Dade County, Florida has more people living less than 4 feet above sea level than any
U.S. state, except Louisiana. But rising sea levels pose a more immediate threat than finding
one’s house underwater. The USGC (United States Geologic Survey) has already identified
a problem with saltwater intrusion into the underground freshwater aquifer:

North Atlantic fisheries have suffered great declines in the fish used in England for fish and chips,
and in the US for fish sticks. The fish is known as Gadus morhua, or the Atlantic cod.
Scientists believe this fish, now listed by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of
Nature) as vulnerable, has declined because warming ocean currents greatly lowered the number
of zooplankton, which these fish use for food.
Warming temperatures would cause tropical conditions to move farther north and south of the
equator. This would increase the habitat of an insect vector, the mosquito, which transmits
diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and encephalitis.
Since plants take in carbon dioxide during photosynthesis to make sugars, starch, and cellulose, and
large plants can store a lot of carbon dioxide, scientists have suggested that we plant more
trees.
How to write the properly balanced equation for the production of glucose during photosynthesis,
(6H20 + 6CO2  C6H12O6 + 6O2), and the properly balanced equation for the oxidation of
glucose during cellular respiration, (C6H12O6 + 6O2  6H20 + 6CO2).
