Operations management is, therefore, a widespread activity embracing all sectors of the economy. An operating system can be either a micro or a macro system. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO) -Know the principles of the organization of operational activities, the basic methods of managing the operational activities of the organization; -know the basic concepts of the organization of operational activities; - Know the types and methods of organizational planning of operational activities; Indicative Course Content An understanding of the difference between the two will help to see the link between operational efficiency and business performance Operations management is concerned with managing the resources that directly produce the organization’s service or product. The resources will usually consist of people, materials, technology and information but may go wider than this. These resources are brought together by a series of processes so that they are utilized to deliver the primary service or product of the organization. Thus, operations is concerned with managing inputs (resources) through transformation processes to deliver outputs (service orproducts). As an area of study operations management is essentially a practical subject. An important feature of operations is that they are dynamic systems. In other words, the inputs, the processes and the outputs are all liable to change over time. It is the role of the operations manager to make sure that these changes are planned and controlled so that the output conforms to what is required. Teaching and Learning Methods • Class work. Students’ individual and group work at the seminars in the form of presentations, problems solving etc. • Homework. Students’ individual and group homework the results of which are presented at the seminars. • Test. Written test.
