Indicative Course
Content
An understanding of the difference between the two will help to see the
link between operational efficiency and business performance Operations
management is concerned with managing the resources that directly
produce the organization’s service or product. The resources will usually
consist of people, materials, technology and information but may go
wider than this. These resources are brought together by a series of
processes so that they are utilized to deliver the primary service or
product of the organization. Thus, operations is concerned with managing
inputs (resources) through transformation processes to deliver outputs
(service orproducts). As an area of study operations management is
essentially a practical subject. An important feature of operations is that
they are dynamic systems. In other words, the inputs, the processes and
the outputs are all liable to change over time. It is the role of the
operations manager to make sure that these changes are planned and
controlled so that the output conforms to what is required.
