LED Light Skin-care Product and Special Cream
I. Background
Everyone tries to reverse the natural process of aging. Major cosmetics companies still use the “mystery of
beauty” to sell their skin-care products. Even with huge advances in medical discovery and human genome
exploration, no serious scientists have tackled this field. Using biotechnology to guide skin-care product
development is Oulian’s mission.
Two major methods exist to reduce wrinkles and rejuvenate skin on the market:
1) Chemical methods: the main products are creams with popular active ingredients, such as Vitamin A, C,
or E, their derivatives, alpha lipoic acid, dimethylaminoethanol, or other anti-oxidant, etc..
2) Physical methods: mechanical surface skin removal or laser surgery.
It is known that Type I collagen (later abbreviated as collagen) increases skin elasticity and firmness. The
traditional methods mentioned above all strive to increase collagen production under the skin.
However, all the traditional methods missed out on one caveat in collagen increase. Collagen increase by
outside force tilts the delicate balance of our body, thus increasing the production of collagenase, which
degrades collagen. This natural phenomenon eventually takes the level of collagen back to the original
state. Oulian’s product solves this dilemma.
II. Oulian’s Product
We have successfully developed a novel skin-care product (patent pending). Our LED (light-emitting
diode) device (CollaLightTM) is made up of 800 LED bulbs of specific wavelength, specific light emitting
angle, specific light strength, and specific light frequency. The final light output is less than 10mw/cm 2.
The mild light does not hurt the skin, yet LED light can still penetrate into theepidermis to activate cells.
Our patented product has another necessary companion, our CollaCreamTM skin-firming cream, applied at
the area illuminated by the CollaLightTM. The active ingredient in CollaCreamTM is a specific small
molecule collagenase inhibitor that is lipid soluble.
Theory
CollaLightTM induces collagen production under the skin. Increased collagen concentration in turn
increases collagenase activity. Oulian’s CollaCreamTM specifically inhibits collagenase, and thus achieves
a high level of collagen under the skin. Other active ingredients in CollaCreamTM, such as Vitamin A, C,
and anti-oxidants additionally induce collagen content in the skin.
Experimental Results
Oulian’s quantitative cell line experiment shows the additive effect of our programmed LED light and
special collagenase inhibitor (the active ingredient in CollaCreamTM) in increasing collagen. Using a 35year-old female skin cell line as experimental material and Type I collagen antibody and western blot as the
detection method , we observed no obvious Type I collagen increase using programmed LED light alone,
10 times Type I collagen increase using collagenase inhibitor alone, and 50 times Type I collagen increase
using both LED light and collagenase inhibitor, compared with the collagen content in skin cells without
external disturbance (shown in Figure below).
The programmed LED light and specific
collagenase inhibitor together have an additive
effect in increasing collagen production in skin
cells. Actin protein amount is used as total protein
concentration control. Procollagen I (Type I
collagen) in the skin cells is measured using Type I
collagen antibody.

inhibitor alone; RH5 +OL-1: LED light 5 minutes

Oulian’s human testing using the CollaLightTM and CollaCreamTM also showed positive results. We have
conducted human testing in 6 beauty salons in Beijing, Guangzhou, and Jiangsu province on our products.
50% of the women saw their wrinkles diminish after 4-10 times of
use; 80% of women saw their skin have increasing elasticity after 311 times of use; 70% of women saw their dark circles and eye bags
diminish after 1-10 times of use. After each treatment, the tested
subject and beautician each wrote down skin changes, with no
communication involved. Only when we see consistent observation
from the tested subject and beautician do we consider the
observation real. Current prototype goggles are made by hand,
shown in the figure at right. We are in the process of updating the
goggle design.
III. Competitors
Laser Surgery
Compared with Laser surgery, Oulian’s product CollaLightTM is superior. CollaLightTM uses very low
energy, thus it does not cause injury to skin. It is small, easy to use, very safe, and inexpensive. It is
designed and suited for home use, while Laser treatment is not. Additionally, CollaLightTM and
CollaCreamTM can achieve results similar to Laser surgery.
LED Light Products
We have two competitors in the US with LED light skin-care products in development. However, their
designs are simpler than ours, yet their prices are 10-100 times more than ours. Their products are bulky,
thus can only be used at beauty salons or doctors’ offices. In addition, no company has included any
special cream in its usage. As shown in our cell line results, without collagenase inhibitor present, the LED
light effect is quite minimal. Thus their products do not achieve as positive a result as ours.
In China we have no competitors.

V. China Market
We are aiming for beauty salons and high-income middle age urban women (28-59 years old, home use) in
the China market. Of this group in China, at least 5 million women can afford our product. If we can
capture 20% of the market (1 million users), charging $250 USD for each device, Oulian’s revenue might
reach $250 million. It could take 1 year of commercial development and promotion to reach that figure. In
addition, CollaCreamTM is a consumable good, thus it can generate constant revenues of around $10
million USD a year.
The uniqueness, effectiveness, and ease of use will be the selling points of Oulian’s product. The company
requires $300K to roll-out this product in the Chinese market.
