You are expected to complete one project this semester. However, you may choose which
project you would like to complete. Each project is worth 100 points. There are four options:

**Each project is DUE Monday, December 15th! (But, you will receive BONUS points if you
turn it in early!) 
IMPORTANT: Each project is to be completed and turned in individually. You may work
together to brainstorm, but each student must have a complete project to turn in.
**You must tell me which project you are doing by FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5th!
You may email your project, print it, or send it via DropBox. ([email protected])
*EXTRA CREDIT: You may turn in an additional project for extra credit. But, you can only
receive half of the points you earn.
Example: If you turn in two projects.
1st Project, your score: 90/100
2nd Project, your score: 90/100 (you can get 45 points)
Total Score: 135/100
Option 1: Algebra Career
This project requires you to research a professional career in which the subject of
algebra is used. You may choose any career you would like, as long as you can find some use
of algebra! You must research and discuss the following:







The field the career is a part of
A description of the career and any requirements for an individual with this
career – What do you do on a daily basis? What kind of skills must you
have?
Different companies that employ individuals with the career
The amount of education required and/or preferred
The average salary of an individual with that career and the starting salary
and highest salary available in this career
How algebra is used. This is the most important part of the project!
Photos of aspects of the career or products produced by companies in this
field
The information must be typed and presented in a way that looks neat and professional.
The format in which you complete the project is optional; you can present one complete paper
with photos included, you can create a brochure, a poster board, etc. This project may also be
done electronically or printed – it is your choice.
**Paper must be at least 2 pages long (double spaced, size 12 font)
**It must also be generally grammatically correct and free of spelling errors – I will be
grading the quality of the paper, as well.

TASK 1: Designing your Park
You have recently been hired to create a blueprint for a water park. Your boss,
Gelatinous Harrington, is a very controlling person. She wants you to include specific
attractions and necessities in your design. First off, she wants it to be done on a large graph
so that she can apply her mathematical knowledge to make the park the best it can be. Before
starting your blueprint, identify the center of your graph, and draw in the x and y axes. Then,
you need to plot the approximate entrance points (where the line starts!) of each attraction
on the graph and draw in the remaining part of the attraction around it in a creative fashion.
Try to spread them out as much as possible.
Items to be included on the design are listed below:

TASK 2: Naming Your Coordinates
After planning out the layout and design of each attraction, you must identify it’s location
by using ordered pairs. Use your “entrance points” as the attractions identifiable location,
create a table and list each location and its ordered pairs.
TASK 3: Calculating the Slope
After identifying each attraction’s location with ordered pairs, you are now ready to
calculate the slope between attractions using the slope formula,
y2 –y1
x2 – x1
Using red (or color of your choice), mark the direct path to/from the locations mentioned
below. Create another table and calculate the slope of the line that is formed for the following
areas:

Task 4: Writing Linear Equations.
In task 3 you identified direct paths between various park attractions by drawing them in
with colored lines. Now, you will write linear equations for each of those red lines.


Use your slope (m) from task 3 and one of the identified endpoints of that line (x,
y).
For each path, identify and list your point b and write your final equation in slopeintercept form.

For this project, you are to create a book explaining all of aspects of graphing a line and
the components that go with it. You must include all of the following pages:
1. An original title page
2. A table of contents with page numbers
3. Explain how to solve for slope using the formula
4. Explain how to solve for slope by looking at a graph
5. Explain the slopes of vertical and horizontal lines
6. Explain how to write an equation for vertical and horizontal lines
7. Writing an equation in standard form
8. Writing an equation in point-slope form
9. Writing an equation in slope-intercept form
10. How to convert from point-slope form to y-intercept form
11. Explain the difference between parallel and perpendicular lines and show it on a graph
12. Explain the relationship of slopes in parallel and perpendicular lines
13. Explain how to graph a line using the x and y-intercepts
14. Explain how to graph inequalities (must have explanations & examples of all 4 inequality
signs)
15. Explain how to shade inequalities (must have explanations & examples of all 4 inequality
signs)

Option 4: Create a Puzzle
Your job is to create a unique inequality puzzle for your classmates to solve. For each
connecting piece, you need to have an inequality matched to its solution. You should have a
different solution for each inequality in order for your classmates to solve the puzzle correctly.
If a side piece does not connect to another piece, it should be blank.
The following are examples of tangram puzzles:

The puzzle must contain the following criteria:
 It must contain color
 Must have at least 25 pieces
 Must form some sort of creative design or shape
 There must be at least one inequality from each type:
o One-Step
o Two-Step
o Multi-Step
o Absolute Vale
 You must also attach an answer key
 This needs to list every equation and its solution with all work shown.
