Personal Development Plan

B1.2
Industrial Design
Identity (old)
Coming from a family where technology and design has gotten a substantial amount of attention, it
definitely had its influence on me. From an eye for house interior and exterior design to fashion
design and an interest innovative technology, I also became aware of, and interested in the beauty
design and technology. From a young age I have a natural thirst to seek information and a
fascination and curiosity towards how products are designed and produced, with their philosophy
and vision. Sometimes the design or function of a product is less interesting than the technology
behind it and the process of production in my opinion.
As a designer within a project, I am a self-centred person (introvert), most of the time I let an
expressive person lead the project. On the other hand, I am not afraid to express my thoughts and
vision, being assertive. I value planning and structure a lot, because being flexible and improvising
I find uncomfortable to work with. Working with motivated designers is enjoyable and uplifting.
Creating a great idea or vision is not an issue, writing or visualizing it is an other thing.
Vision (old)
Products that look very simplistic or almost invisible, but have an impressive function are
fascinating. Simplicity is beautiful because I can hide complexity. People first look at a design and
second at its capabilities, therefore eye-pleasant designs are meaningful. Designing products with
great capabilities and efficient simplicity is the best way to communicate with, and reach the
people.
As a designer it is exciting to see and create innovation or find solutions to substantial problems.
But designing only for innovation or substantial problems is not the way to design. Products that
can be used by everybody, be adapted to different situations and work efficiently are more
important and exciting. For an efficient and optimal design, you should know your target group.
Design should not scare you but help you and sometimes without the user noticing it.
Communication between human and technology is very fascinating, enhancing that communication
is challenging, but important. The overall role and power of technology has advanced and human
replacing products have seen a ginormous development to a point where their power became scary.
That feeling is being replaced by a sense of amazement and joy, where technology helps humans
where others cannot or less effective. Humans should have control over technology and not the
other way around.
Goals
Self-Directed and Continuous Learning
I had never thought about my identity and vision before, let alone made some goals. Although I
believe that SDCL is important for a designer. A designer needs to be able identify himself with a
vision, set goals to develop as a designer and have a focus on which direction you want to grow. I
had difficulties in finding and articulating my vision and identity and I know I that there is a lot of
room for improvement and expansion. It is important for me to improve so I can make the best
decisions at the start of B2.1.
Goal 1: Throughout this last semester I want to put extra focus on my vision and identity.
Goal 2: From this point I am going to keep updating my PDP. At the end of this educational year, I
want to have an updated and improved PDP.
Professional Photo- and Videography
I need to improve my photography, videography and editing skills more. I discovered that it creates
a lot of satisfaction when you create something that is both eye-pleasing and functional. Besides
that, I figured that it is also a powerful tool to improve communication. Because of the fact that past
semester was the first time I needed to film and make an illustration, I obvious need to learn a lot. I
already followed a couple of workshops related to this subject.
Goal 1: Contribute in making movies, presentations and posters for upcoming assignments this
semester.
Goal 2: Follow the workshop: Video & Photography lecture/workshop.
(Personal) Goal: Practise more through projects in my spare time. For example, movie and photo
editing for social media.
Prototyping
Prototypes enhances the communication of ideas even more. Others can interact with your concept
and clearly understand your vision. Although I have a big interest in how product work and how
they are manufactured, my actual prototyping skills are not so great.
Goal 1: Create a well build and working prototype with my current B1.2 project combining
Creative Programming knowledge with the skills I have working with other materials.
Goal 2: Follow the Basic Formgiving Skills course. Improving my material knowledge and
handling to create long lasting prototypes.
Marketing
Marketing is an important part of developing a good and successful product. Throughout second
quartile I figured that a product could be a great success, but if the marketing is not done properly
that the chance of failing is increased significantly. Also marketing can influence your design
process and helps you create the right product for your customer group. Marketing is an area where
my knowledge lacks, despite its importance.
Goal 1: Pass the retake on my New Product Development and Marketing course.
Goal 2: Successfully follow my other two USE courses upcoming quartiles.
