Chantilly High School
Athletic Training Program
Athletic Training is an allied-health profession recognized by the American Medical
Association. Responsibilities include injury prevention, immediate injury care, clinical &
functional evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation & reconditioning, organization, administration &
professional responsibility. Athletic Trainers have an understanding of specific sport’s
physical requirements, which enables them to develop specific rehabilitation exercises to
better prepare the athletes for their activity. The ATC also serves as a liaison between
athletes, coaches, parents, treating physicians and other healthcare providers.
STAFF: The Chantilly High School Athletic Training Staff includes Amanda Marvin MS, VATL,
ATC and Kevin Boss VATL, ATC.
Our team physicians are Dr. David Novak of Commonwealth Orthopedics and Dr. G. Michael
Lynch of Fair Oaks Hospital. Dr. Crystal Hnatko is a family practice physician in a sports
medicine fellowship program from Fairfax Family Practice.
Two main reasons to report to the athletic training staff:
1. Inability to participate in all or part of a practice or game due to illness or injury.
2. Symptoms of an injury which cause loss of function to a body part or drop in
athlete’s performance.
3.
Hours of Operation
The Certified Athletic Trainer Coverage Policy according to FCPS Requirements:
The Athletic Training Room will be open for rehabilitation and evaluations for all sports
Monday-Friday at 2:05 pm. An ATC will be available for treatments through the beginning of
the first evening practice. This time changes daily and typically falls between 6pm and 7pm.
Weekend treatments are scheduled by appointment at the discretion of the ATC .* All Varsity,
JV, and Freshman football practices (except walk-thru with NO equipment) must be covered
on site. No other sports require specific practice coverage.
GAME COVERAGE FOR FCPS ATHLETIC TRAINERS
An ATC will be available during all home contests for all student-athletes. All away contests
are covered by the host school’s athletic trainer (with the exception of all levels of football).
The following sports are those that require event coverage and are listed in order of coverage
priority.
FALL
 Football (Varsity, JV, Freshman)
 Field Hockey (Varsity, JV, Freshman)
7
 Volleyball (Varsity, JV, Freshman)
 Cross Country (Boys and Girls)
WINTER
 Wrestling (Varsity, JV)
 Boys and Girls Basketball (Varsity, JV, Freshman)
 Girls Gymnastics
 Indoor Track (Boys and Girls)*
SPRING
 Boys and Girls Lacrosse (Varsity, JV)
 Boys and Girls Soccer (Varsity, JV)
 Boys and Girls Outdoor Track & Field (Varsity, JV)
 Softball (Varsity, JV)
 Baseball (Varsity, JV)
 Boys and Girls Tennis
FCPS Policy Points to Remember:
 All injuries & illnesses effecting participation must be reported to a staff ATC
 Clearance must be given by a staff ATC following time loss or other significant injury
before returning to athletic activity in FCPS. (This may be in addition to physician
clearance)
 The ATC cannot overrule the physician’s guidelines that prohibit or restrict athletic activity.
 The ATC may modify the athlete’s activities as a means of reducing significant risk to
further injury.
 All inhalers, EPI-Pens, etc. belonging to athletes must be at EVERY practice and game
for the athlete to participate.
BASIC CARE OF MUSCULOSKELETAL INJURIES
RICES method of first aid:
 Rest: Do not push the injury past the point of sharp pain and dysfunction.
 Ice: Use cold therapy for the Inflammatory period (usually first 72 hours post injury)
 Compression: Increase pressure outside blood vessels to limit swelling
 Elevation: Raise above the heart to help venous return and reduce swelling
 Splinting: Immobilize the area to limit motion and further damage.
** Do not heat a new injury, especially if it shows signs of inflammation**
Wound Care:
When/if your athlete comes home with an open wound, make sure the wound is properly
cleaned with soap and water, covered with a bandaid and covered for athletic activity. If you
notice that the wound is not healing as it should, please bring it to the attention of the Athletic
Training staff.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
IF MY CHILD SEES A PHYSICIAN, DO THEY STILL NEED TO BE SEEN BY THE ATC?
YES- In the event that an athlete sees his/her physician for any condition that is a result of
their participation in sports OR limits their participation; please present the ATHLETIC
TRAINING STAFF with a copy of the physician’s note containing any recommendations
regarding return to any activity. This includes serious illness as well as injury and other
conditions.
DO I GIVE MY CHILD’S COACH THE DOCTOR’S NOTE?
PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THIS NOTE TO THE COACH!! Please bring the note to the ATC so
that we can review the doctor’s recommendations which state the level at which the athlete is
able to participate. We will pass all pertinent information on to the coaches. Even if the note
clears your child for participation, they must also be cleared through the athletic training staff.
WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD DO WITH THEIR MEDICATIONS?
All inhalers, EPI-Pens, etc belonging to athletes must be at EVERY practice and game for the
athlete to participate. The athlete must have ready access to their medication at all times.
Also, be sure to inform or remind coaches and the Athletic Training Staff of any significant
medical concerns they may not be aware of.

VIRGINIA HIGH SCHOOL
LEAGUE
The VHSL is a non-profit, voluntary organization composed of the
301 public high schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The
League is a service organization whose purpose is to build better
citizens through interscholastic activities such as athletics, drama,
debate, forensics, cheerleading, creative writing and publications for students throughout
Virginia. More than 150,000 boys and girls participate in League programs each year.
League membership affords member schools numerous benefits that include:
- Equitable competition for all
- Common set of rules for competition
- Student services and leadership education
- Workshops and competition for drama, debate, forensics, creative writing and publications
- State championships in athletic competitions
- Awards, materials and supplies
- Catastrophic insurance for students
Who governs the VHSL?
The VHSL is governed by a 30-member Executive Committee, meeting four times each year,
to set League policy and enact legislation. Membership on the committee consists of one
elected school principal representing each of the 12 regions, eight superintendents
representing geographical regions, three athletic/activities directors, the Executive Director,
the past League Chairman, two members of the General Assembly and one representative
each from the State Department of Education, VSBA and PTA. Principals of the 290 member
schools, each with one vote, serve as the membership and meet twice a year to conduct
League business; the membership does have a veto power (two-thirds vote) over the
Executive Committee.

CHS POLICIES FOR STUDENT
ATHLETES
Extracurricular Participation Policy
This form is distributed by the coach of every team each season. This form must
be signed and returned in order to participate.
FAIRFAX COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS PARTICIPATION POLICY
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND ATHLETIC PROGRAMS
2008-2009
Student activities are a part of the total school program and provide opportunities for students to supplement their
classroom experiences. Participation in the activities program is a privilege, not a right. School administrators may
suspend student participation in student activities for inappropriate conduce, regardless of whether that conduct
occurs during the school day, evenings, weekends, or holidays. Inappropriate conduct includes but is not limited to
conduct listed in this agreement, conduct in violation of rules and agreements established between students and
their coaches/sponsors, and conduct in violation of a school’s student behavior guidelines, VHSL rules or FCPS
Regulation 2601 (Student Responsibilities and Rights). Although students may use the Regulation 2601 complaint
procedure to appeal decisions regarding student activities, the school administrator’s decision to exclude or
suspend student participation in an activity will not be held in abeyance while the student pursues his or her
complaint right.
Coaches and sponsors will distribute activity rules and policies at the beginning of each season to student
participants and parents. Coaches and sponsors will discuss and clarify their expectations regarding school-wide
participation policies and the particular activity’s rules and commitments. Students are required to comply with
these rules and may forfeit their privilege to participate if they engage in any prohibited conduct.
Student Standards of Conduct
Alcohol, Tobacco, Other Drugs and Steroids
Students will not participate in student activities if they engage in prohibited conduct pertaining to alcohol, tobacco,
or other illegal drugs as outlined in FCPS Student Responsibilities and Rights Regulation 2601.

Students may not possess, use, sell, give, or otherwise transmit or be under the influence of any drug of
abuse or alcoholic beverage, the possession of which is prohibited by law.

Possession or use of any tobacco product is prohibited.

Students are expected not to put themselves into compromising situations where drugs, alcohol or
tobacco products are being used. If they are at a party where drugs, alcohol or tobacco products are
being used, students are expected to leave immediately or risk being suspended from student activities
for at least 15 calendar days.

If it is determined that a student has used steroids, the student is subject to consequences under Virginia
code effective July 1, 2005, which in summary bans students from activities for a 2 year period.
Other Behaviors
Students will not participate in student activities if they engage in prohibited conduct pertaining to attendance
violations, disruption of activities, damage of property, stealing, assault and battery, weapons, obscenity,
disobedience, harassment, and hazing as outlined in FCPS Student Responsibilities and Rights Regulation 2601.

Students suspended from school will not be permitted to participate in student activities while suspended
from school.

Students assigned detention by teachers and/or administrators must report the detention to their coach or
sponsor. The coach or sponsor will determine any additional action to be taken according to the activity
rules given to students at the beginning of the year.

Students will not engage in hazing or harassment. Where such results in bodily injury to a student,
offender(s) are subject to criminal prosecution and to expulsion by the Fairfax County School Board, as
mandated by Virginia law. School officials may recommend suspension and/or expulsion in any case, and
students who violate this rule will lose extracurricular participation privileges.
Attendance Policy

Students must be in school the entire day to be eligible to participate in any student activities scheduled
on that day. Exceptions to this standard may be made with the prior approval of the Director of Student
Activities.
Consequences for Student Violation of Standards of Conduct
If the school determines that a student who is participating in athletics is engaged in prohibited conduct, the student
will be subject to consequences.
Prior to making such a determination and imposing any exclusionary
consequence, the coach and/or school authorities shall give the athlete the right to explain his/her conduct.
11
Students and/or their parents may appeal actions pursuant to this policy taken by the coach. The first level of
appeal is to the Director of Student Activities. The second level of appeal is to the Principal. Decisions rendered
under this policy cannot be appealed beyond the principal, whose decision is final. The school administration will
send a written decision to the parent within two days of the appeal hearing.
Students charged with a crime in the community that involves violence, tobacco, alcohol, or any other prohibited
substance will be suspended from participation in student activities until disposition of the charges. Students must
report any such incidents to the coach, who will present the facts as known to the school administrator, who will
determine eligibility for participation. Failure to report such an incident may result in exclusion from participation in
student activities for the remainder of the school year.

activities, damage of property, stealing, assault and battery, weapons, obscenity,
disobedience, harassment, and hazing)

Attendance
CHS expects students to be in school all day in order to participate in any
extracurricular activity. This includes the day of a competition or performance, the day
before, the day after and any practice day. Academics are the main focus of school and
it is extremely important that the athletes keep this in mind.
The Director of Student Activities must approve any exception to this policy. For
approval of an exception, the student must bring a note from their parent to the
Activities Office 24 hours before the date of the exception. The note should explain the
reasons for requesting an exception from the attendance policy.
After School Help
Students should ALWAYS stay after school for help if needed. Most teachers are
available any day after school, however, Monday and Thursday are late bus days and
many designate those days for extra help.
The student should be sure that their coach knows in advance that they will be
late for practice and the reason and bring a note from the teacher for the coach.
Coaches will always let students stay for help without any penalties.
Transportation
Students are required to ride the bus when a bus is
provided. There are times when Fairfax County
transportation is limited and not available. During those times athletes will be asked to
make alternate transportation arrangements, which can include driving themselves or
having parents drive.
When a bus is provided, coaches cannot make exceptions to this policy. The
Director of Student Activities can approve an exception. If an athlete has extenuating
circumstances that makes it impossible to ride the bus to an event or home, they need to
bring a note from their parent to the Activities Office 24 hours in advance for approval.
Postponements
Most cancellations and postponements occur between 1 and 2
PM. We wait as late in the day as possible before we cancel an event.
Weather permitting we try to notify students of the game status before
school ends at 2:05.

Sportsmanship
•VHSL is the governing body for sportsmanship rules
27-13-1 SPORTSMANSHIP RULE-Member schools are required to conduct all their relations with other schools in a
spirit of good sportsmanship. Acts which are prima facie evidence of failure to abide by this rule are those which are noted
below and others of a similar nature which transgress the usually accepted code for good sportsmanship. All incidents of
conduct relating to either athletic or academic activities that are violations of the Sportsmanship Rule must be reported to
the Virginia High School League. (page 32 of the VHSL handbook)
The Spectator Should:
(1) Realize that he/she represents the school just as definitely as does the member of a team and, therefore, has an
obligation to be a true sportsman, encouraging through this behavior the practice of good sportsmanship by others.
(2) Recognize that good sportsmanship is more important than victory by approving and applauding good team play,
individual skill and outstanding examples of sportsmanship and fair play exhibited by either team.
(3) Recognize that since the primary purpose of interscholastic athletics is to promote the physical, mental, moral, social
and emotional well-being of the players through the medium of contests, victory or defeat is in reality of secondary
importance.
(4) Treat visiting teams and officials as guests, extending to them every courtesy.
(5) Be modest in victory and gracious in defeat.
(6) Respect the judgment and integrity of officials, realizing that their decisions are based upon game conditions as they
observe them.
The Athlete Should:
(1) Be courteous to visiting teams and officials.
(2) Play hard and to the limit of his/her ability, regardless of discouragement. The true athlete does not give up nor does
he/she quarrel, cheat, bet or grandstand.
(3) Retain his/her composure at all times and never leave the bench or enter the playing field/court to engage in a fight.
(4) Be modest when successful and be gracious in defeat. A true sportsman does not offer excuses for failures.
(5) Maintain a high degree of physical fitness by observing team and training rules conscientiously.
(6) Demonstrate loyalty to the school by maintaining a satisfactory scholastic standing and by participating in or supporting
other school activities.
(7) Play for the love of the game.
(8) Understand and observe the rules of the game and the standards of eligibility.
(9) Set a high standard of personal cleanliness.
(10) Respect the integrity and judgment of officials and accept their decisions without questions.
(11) Respect the facilities of host schools and the trust entailed in being a guest.
 Remember to always be POSITIVE -not negative
 Opponents are our guests, please treat them accordingly
 Sanctions – The school can be penalized for unsportsmanlike behavior of fans or
athletes.
 We need parents to be positive role models for our athletes and fans
 Good sportsmanship is one of the best ways to exhibit good character and good
citizenship

Emergency Care Cards
A new ECC is required each season. Forms are available on line. A link can be
found on the Chantilly HS website, the Chantilly Sports Website or the FCPS Website,
http://www.fcps.edu/DIT/forms/se3.pdf. Be sure that each season when you complete
the ECC that you have updated all important information, such as, current phone
numbers, home, work and cell; emergency contacts; and insurance information.
Tickets
Tickets for regular season events are $5 for all sports. Track, Golf,
Swim and Dive, and Tennis do not charge entry fees.
 Post season tournaments fees are $6 for District and $7.00 for
Region. State fees are set by VHSL; specific information will be posted at
www.VHSL.org.
 CHS Booster pass is accepted at regular season HOME events only with ID.
 Comp Tickets are for ADULTS only--home or away events
Contest/Practice Conflicts
Students who are members of more than one team or group at Chantilly will
sometimes find that they have more than one event scheduled per day. The standard
practice at Chantilly is that a contest or performance will take priority over a practice. It
is important that students plan ahead and provide their coach and instructors with a copy
of their schedule so that complications can be resolved early.
Questions
If you have questions concerning your student’s activity
please contact the coach. E-mail addresses have been provided in
this booklet and each coach is happy to arrange for a time to speak
with you. Should you need additional help feel free to contact the
Activities Office.
15
TEAM MEETINGS
