Heat Pollution
Did you know?
• When you use an electric light bulb,
only about 5% of the electrical
energy becomes light energy!
• The rest becomes wasted heat!!
Why so much waste?
• Since we use so much energy, there
is more heat waste being produced
than ever before.
• This waste heat is called heat
pollution, or thermal pollution, and
has a negative effect on our
environment.
Some like it HOT!
• The average air temperature in and near
a big city is almost always a few degrees
warmer than several kilometres away.
• Buildings, roads, sidewalks, and cars all
absorb solar energy.
• Energy use in cities is higher producing a
high quantity of heat pollution.
To get COOL we make it
HOT!
• The heat waste in a city combine to cause air
temperature in a city to rise.
• In the summer the air gets hotter, so people
turn on their air conditioners!
• Air conditioners also produce heat waste,
creating a situation where people react to the
increase in temperature by turning on air
conditioners, which increase the temperature
even more!
Causes of Heat Pollution
• The main causes of heat pollution
are:
– Industry
– Deforestation
– Soil Erosion
Industry
• Waste heat from cities and industry
raises the temperature of the air
and of water in lakes and rivers.
Deforestation
• Decrease in vegetation allows more
light to hit the water which heats
up the temperature f the water.
Soil Erosion
• Erosion makes the water muddy,
which increases the amount of light
(heat) that is absorbed.

Heat Pollution and Wildlife
• Increase in temperature decreases
the oxygen level in water.
• This can disrupt the habitat of
marine plants and animals. Changes
in habitat can be fatal to many
species.
Heat Pollution and
Agriculture
• Temperature increases can affect
field crops and orchards, in some
cases resulting in a longer growing
season.
• Precipitation patterns may also be
affected by increases in
temperatures.
