The nationally competitive Illinois State University Individual Events Program is pleased
to announce one Graduate Assistant position opening for Fall 2014.
Responsibilities will include traveling to tournaments, helping with coaching assignments,
recruiting, helping with tournament hosting, working our summer workshop, etc. There are also
opportunities to teach in the department while you are here.
An assistantship includes a full tuition waiver as well as a monthly stipend. (Graduate assistants
are responsible for paying student fees.) The I.E. graduate assistants will also have opportunities
to work with award-winning coaches and nationally-placed competitors.
ISU has one of the finest graduate communication programs in the country. If you are looking

Program Philosophy & Curriculum
The School of Communication at Illinois State University approaches the study of human
communication from both humanistic and social scientific perspectives. A curriculum largely
focused on the application of theory and research includes twenty-two graduate seminars that
examine a wide range of topics in the study of human communication. These include:
interpersonal communication, small group communication, mass communication, organizational
communication, intercultural communication, persuasion, public relations, rhetoric, training &
development, and both quantitative and qualitative research methods. With only two required
courses, students are afforded a great deal of freedom to develop unique plans of study that meet
personal and professional needs. Students may choose either a 32-hour thesis or a 39-hour nonthesis option to complete the degree.
Career Options
Graduates of our nationally recognized program pursue careers in college teaching, training &
development, marketing, advertising, human & employee relations, public relations, media
management, media relations, and community relations. Many of our graduates go on to
complete Ph.D. degrees in communication.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the program, a student must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 over the last 60
hours of undergraduate degree coursework. International students are additionally required to
obtain a minimum TOEFL score of 250 (computer-based testing), 100 (Internet-based testing), or
600 (paper-based). Applicants must complete the on-line admission application, which requires
submission of a narrative that describes the applicant’s background, interests, career objectives,
and fit to our program. Three letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the Director of
Graduate Studies of the School of Communication (address below). To ensure full consideration
for admission in Fall 2014, application materials must be received no later than February 1,
2014. The Graduate School’s on-line admission application is available at:

Graduate Assistantships
Graduate assistantships are available to qualified individuals. Graduate assistants are trained to
teach an introductory course in communication and/or to perform other services for the School of
Communication. The assistantship carries a full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend of $955.
The School will have approximately 20-25 graduate assistantships open for the 2014 Fall
semester. The assistantship application is available at: https://www.jobs.ilstu.edu/ (click
“Graduate Assistant Postings”). The on-line assistantship application requires a one-page
narrative summarizing the applicant’s philosophy of teaching and learning. To ensure full
consideration for an assistantship in Fall 2014, application materials must be received no later
than February 1, 2014.
