Worked for this organization under Professor of Political Science Henry Brady.
Together with Professor Brady and Professor of Political Science (UC Santa Barbara) Cynthia
Kaplan, researched the role of mass publics in independence and democratization movements
in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union.
Developed and analyzed a database of mass public events in the region in the late 1980s and
early 1990s, based on a reading of numerous secondary sources.
Worked with Professors Brady and Kaplan to develop formal models of decision-making by
political elites in response to and anticipation of mass protest.

Worked for this organization under Associate Professor of Economics John S. Earle, studying
a number of topics related to the economic and political transformation of formerly communist
countries and assisting in the provision of policy advice in transitional economies.
Researched the relationship between economic reform and political attitudes in transitional
countries, and the transformation of privatized enterprises in the Czech Republic.
At the request of the Office of the Prime Minister of Mongolia, was engaged in a project to
design and implement a privatization program for Mongolia.
Met with and provided advice to members of Government of Moldova, particularly in the field
of pension reform.
Coordinated a large survey of medium-sized, privatized manufacturing enterprises in the
Czech Republic, and disseminated results from that research through a seminar for Czech
managers and academics.
Performed statistical analysis of large data sets for a number of other projects coordinated by
Prof. Earle.
Worked with Professor Earle to secure funding for research activities from a number of
foundations and multilateral organizations, helping to write grant applications.
