CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: An overview
This chapter deals with the system that transports blood to and from cells—the cardiovascular system. The
heart is the pumping mechanism of the circulatory system. It is a hollow organ about the size of a fist and
is composed of cardiac muscle tissue. A thin, tough membrane, called the pericardium, surrounds the heart.
The average heartbeat is about 72 times per minute.
OBJECTIVES
After you have studied this chapter, you should be able to:
 Name the organs of the cardiovascular system, and discuss their functions.
 Identify and locate the major parts of the heart and discuss the functions of each
part.
 Trace the pathway of the blood through the heart and the vessels of the coronary
circulation.
 Discuss the cardiac cycle, and explain how it is controlled.
 Identify the parts of a normal ECG pattern, and discuss the significance of this
pattern.
 Compare the structures and functions of the major types of blood vessels.
 Describe how substances are exchanged between blood in capillaries and the
tissue fluid surrounding body cells.
 Describe the mechanisms that aid in returning venous blood to the heart.
 Explain how blood pressure is produced and controlled.
 Compare the pulmonary and systemic circuits of the cardiovascular system.
 Identify and locate the major arteries and veins of the pulmonary and systemic
circuits.
