CAHSEE (Math) Vocabulary Terms
1. Expression (AF 1.1, 1.2)
A mathematical phrase involving constraints, variables, and operation symbols;

2. Variable (AF 1.1, 1.2)
A letter in an expression or equation that represents a quantity;
Example: in the expression  6 xy  2 xy , the numbers  6 and 2 are constants and x, y are
variables
3. Order of Operations (AF 1.1, 1.2, 4.1)
Rules telling in what order to do operations: parentheses, exponents, multiply, divide, add,
subtract
4. Exponent (AF, 2.1; A1 2.0)
A number that indicates how many times the base is used as a factor
5. Base (AF 2.1)
The number or variable that is raised to a power

Two numbers that have a product of 1

Any function whose graph is a straight line

A relationship between two quantities in which one is strictly less than or less than or equal

14. Denominator (NS 1.2)
The part of the fraction that is below the fraction bar

The measure, in square units, of the interior region of a two-dimensional figure or surface of
a three-dimensional figure
16. Circumference (MG 2.1)
The length of the perimeter of a circle
17. Compound Interest (NS 1.3, 1.7)
Interest that is paid on the principal and on previously earned interest
