PSALM 46
A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD
GOD IS WITH US!
PSALM 1
“We sing this psalm to the praise of
God, because God is with us and
powerfully and miraculously preserves
and defends his church and his word
against all fanatical spirits, against the
gates of hell, against the implacable
hatred of the devil, and against all the
assaults of the world, the flesh and
sin.”
Martin Luther
PSALM 46
• A general confidence in God vv. 1-3
• A special experience with God vv. 4-7
• A final assurance from God vv. 8-11
• “Few psalms breath the spirit of sturdy
confidence in the Lord in the midst of very real
dangers as strongly as does this one.”
H. C. Leupold
GOD IS WITH US!
46:1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear
though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved
into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling.

• A mighty Fortress is our God,
A Bulwark never failing;
Our Helper He amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe
Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God
is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his
own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also
with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring
any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.
34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—
more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of
God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall
separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or
distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger,
or sword? 37 No, in all these things we are more than
conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that
neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things
present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor
depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to
separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
GOD IS WITH US!
4 There is a river whose streams make
glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her;
she shall not be moved;
God will help her when morning dawns.
6 The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;
he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

GOD IS WITH US!
• Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth His Name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
GOD IS WITH US!
Isaiah 41:10 fear not, for I am with you; be not
dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen
you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my
righteous right hand. 11 Behold, all who are
incensed against you shall be put to shame and
confounded; those who strive against you shall
be as nothing and shall perish. 12 You shall seek
those who contend with you, but you shall not
find them; those who war against you shall be as
nothing at all. 13 For I, the LORD your God, hold
your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not
GOD IS WITH US!
8 Come, behold the works of the LORD,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the
earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the
spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The LORD of hosts is with us;
GOD IS WITH US!
• Matthew 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall
conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his
name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
• Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and said to
them, “All authority in heaven and on earth
has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe
all that I have commanded you. And behold, I
am with you always, to the end of the age.”
GOD IS WITH US!
Mark 4:37 And a great windstorm arose, and the
waves were breaking into the boat, so that the
boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the
stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him
and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that
we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and
rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace!
Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a
great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so
afraid? Have you still no faith?”
GOD IS WITH US!
Philippians 2:8 And being found in human form,
he humbled himself by becoming obedient to
the point of death, even death on a cross.
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and
bestowed on him the name that is above every
name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every
knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and
under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the
Father.
GOD IS WITH US!
Revelation 19:11 Then I saw heaven opened, and
behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called
Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and
makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on
his head are many diadems, and he has a name written
that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a
robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is
called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of
heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were
following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth
comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the
nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He
will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God
the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a
name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
GOD IS WITH US!
• And though this world, with devils filled,
Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim,
We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure,
For lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
