Mixture Problems – Application of System of Equations
Ex1) The sum of two numbers is 87. If twice the smaller number is subtracted from the larger number, the result is 12.
Find the numbers.
Ex2) A company has two molds to form tires. One mold has a set-up cost of $600 and the other has a set-up cost of
$1,100. The cost to make each tire on the first machine is $15, and the cost on the second is $13. When is the more
expensive machine to set-up a better purchase?
Ex3) A jar is filled with exactly 80 coins, a combination of quarters and nickels only. The total value is $14.60, how
many of each coin was in the jar?
ex4) A coin bank contains only quarters and dimes. The total value of the coins in the bank is $10.40 or 1040 cents. If
the quarters were dimes and the dimes were quarters, the total value would be $9.20. Find the number of dimes and
quarters in the bank. Is it worth $10.40?
1) The difference between two numbers is 10. If three times the larger number is added to twice the smaller the result
is 70. Find the numbers.
2) Three times one integer plus another integer is 29. If the first integer plus twice the second is 18, find the integers.
3) Twice one integer plus another integer is 21. If the first integer plus three times the second is 33, find the integers.
4) Find two numbers whose sum is 37 and difference is 21.
5) One number is 4 more than twice the second number. Their total is 25. Find the numbers.
6) A first number plus twice a second number is 8. Twice the first number plus the second numbers totals 25. Find the
two numbers.
7) A coin bank contains only nickels and dimes. The total value of the coins in the bank is $2.50 or 250 cents. If the
nickels were dimes and the dimes were nickels, the total value would be $3.50. Find the number of dimes and nickels in
the bank. Is it worth $2.50?
8) A jar is filled with exactly 100 coins, a combination of quarters and dimes only. The total value is $13.00, how many
of each coin was in the jar?
9) A jar contains $3.00 in nickels and dimes. If the number of dimes is 5 more than twice the number of nickels, how
many of each coin are in the jar?
10) During the 2008 Football Pro Bowl, 63 points were scored in touchdowns and field goals (for this problem we will
ignore the extra points). The total number of touchdowns (6 points) and field goals (3 points) was 12. How many
touchdowns and how many field goals were scored?
11) A merchant wants to mix peanuts with cashews to get 48 pounds of a mixture worth $4/pound. Peanuts cost
$3/pound and cashews cost $6/pound. How much of each should be in the 48 pound mxture?
12) The set-up cost of a machine that mills brass plates is $750. After set-up costs, it cost $0.25 to mill each plate.
Management is considering the use of a larger machine that will cost $1200 to set-up, but can produce the same plates
at $0.20 each. How many plates would the company have to produce to make the larger machine a better purchase.
