Beach Ball Pass
Task: review sounds, non-phonetic sight words, syllables type, or roots.
Just about anything can be reviewed this way!
Materials:
•
Beach ball with review terms written all over it with permanent
marker.
Directions:
Toss the ball around the classroom. Each student who catches the ball
reads the sound, real word, or nonsense word their thumb touches.
Review Sounds: The student who catches the ball says the sound his
thumb touches.
Review Non-Phonetic Sight Words: Add words to the ball as your class
learns them. Students practice reading the word and/or using it in a
sentence.
Review Syllables: Write one-syllable real or nonsense words
representing the syllable types. When the student catches the ball,
they read the syllable under their left thumb and then the one under
their right thumb. The student should then blend the syllables together
to make a two-syllable word. The student should also identify the
syllable types.
Note: Make sure students read from left to right during reinforcement
activities.
