Forensic Scientist Questioned Documents Position: #CF448 Salary Range: $51,142 - $92,402 Roanoke, VA OPEN UNTIL FILLED The Virginia Department of Forensic Science is seeking a qualified individual to perform questioned document analysis at our Western Laboratory. The incumbent will independently examine, compare and identify questioned documents and/or their components (e.g., handwriting, typewriting, inks, papers, etc.); interpret results and prepare Certificates of Analysis; prepare demonstrative exhibits; interpret and defend analyses in courts of law; and provide investigative assistance to law enforcement officers concerning document evidence. Occasional overnight travel is required, and employee must provide own transportation as needed. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree. Successful completion of a two year, full time training program covering all areas of Questioned Document Examination. Training must have been completed in a recognized forensic laboratory or under a recognized examiner. Demonstrated ability to conduct a variety of examinations and comparisons in order to detect genuineness, forgery or alterations in assorted types (e.g. handwritten, typewritten, machine copies, commercially printed) of questioned documents and/or their components. Some of the required abilities include those related to comparative handwriting examinations; detection and deciphering of alterations, obliterations and erasures; analysis of machine printed documents and identification of the source machine; analysis and comparison of pens, pencils, inks, and paper; torn paper comparisons, and the recovery of indented writing. Skill in operating specialized equipment such as microscopes and other optical aids; photographic and other imaging devices; a variety of lighting methods including those involving radiant energy in the ultraviolet, visible and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum; and electrostatic equipment for the recovery of indented writing. Experience preparing formal written reports of findings and conclusions and ability to provide effective expert testimony in court. Ability to train law enforcement personnel. Preferred Qualifications: Certification by the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners, Inc. (ABFDE); experience providing expert witness testimony in courts of law; and familiarity with ASCLD/LAB- International accreditation program standards.
