Student Intern Objectives
1. ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES:
Objective is to learn the administrative functions which operate within a USMS district,
to include; prisoner services, budget administration, automated systems, file preparation
and storage.
2. COURT/PRISONER SERVICES:
a. Cellblock Operation Objective is to learn basic cellblock procedures, including;
booking, JABS system, fingerprinting, and completing paperwork. Exposure to the
cellblock will only be under direct supervision and in low risk situations. Direct contact
with prisoners is prohibited.
b. Courtroom Security Objective is to learn the proper procedures for producing a
federal prisoner in court and the role of the USMS in federal court proceedings. The
student will also learn how to secure the courtroom, the various security concerns of the
USMS, and prisoner handling considerations during trial. The student will generally
observe the court proceedings from the gallery.
c. Prisoner Transportation Objective is to learn the process in moving a federal prisoner.
Examples include restraint application, completing remands, property receipts, alert
notices, medical issues, and searching the transport vehicle without a prisoner present.
3. INVESTIGATIVE SERVICES:
a. Fugitive Investigations Objective is to learn the process for conducting fugitive
investigations such as computer inquiries, surveillance, arrests, and booking.
Exposure to fugitive investigations will be only under direct supervision of a USMS
employee. The student volunteer will not directly assist in arrests.
4. JUDICIAL SECURITY SERVICES:
a. Asset Forfeiture Objective is to learn the process of seizing and disposing of
forfeited assets in USMS custody, to include; storage, inventory, and various types of
court process involved.
b. Court Security Officer (CSO) Program Objective is to learn the role of a CSO in a
federal courthouse. The student volunteer will observe courtroom security, lobby post
screening, command center, cargo and mail screening, and roving patrols. The intern
will additionally complete the in-district CSO training program.
c. Judicial Security Inspector Objective is to learn the role of a District Judicial
Security Inspector in a USMS district, and their responsibilities to courthouse security
issues, threat analysis, and CSO liaison.
d. Service of Process Objective is to learn the procedure for serving process in the
USMS such as techniques to locate the person/company to be served, serving the process
and properly completing the USM-285 with a USMS employee.
5. U.S. MARSHAL, CHIEF DEPUTY U.S. MARSHAL, AND SUPERVISORY DEPUTY
U.S. MARSHALS:
Objective is to learn the role of district management in operating a USMS district. Intern will
"shadow" various personnel and assist as directed.
6. OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED/ SPECIAL PROJECT:
Objective is for the intern to participate in other USMS and related missions as
designated by district management. As needed, intern may be assigned a special project
to complete.
