GB Rowing Team Start Centre in a region convenient for the postholder
Placement Purpose
This is an opportunity for an individual with a strong interest in rowing coaching to begin
their high performance coaching career. This placement is the ideal opportunity for a
current student (either on a placement year or a part-time student with enough free time to
carry out the duties of the post), or someone wishing to begin their career in the field of
high performance rowing coaching as part of one of the most successful teams in the world.
Responsibilities







Providing support to the Start Coach and centre athletes
Participating in public recruitment campaigns to identify suitable athletes to test,
including looking for new ways to raise awareness of Start and finding new marketing
opportunities, contacting schools and sports clubs, producing publicity
documentation
Providing support to coaches by carrying out and recording testing of athletes
(anthropometrical, strength, endurance, ergometer testing)
Learning to give effective athlete feedback and playing an active part in the technical
improvements of beginners on land and water
Assisting at regular water and land based training, at competitions and at training
camps
Playing a key role in the development of athletes who have the potential to go on to
represent Great Britain in rowing
Completing a range of Start Centre related administrative tasks
Person Specification






Previous personal rowing or coaching experience is essential at Club or University
level
Likely to be studying for a degree (but other situations will be considered). An
understanding of relevant Sport Science such as biomechanics, motor control,
physiology, anatomy, sports psychology etc. is highly desirable but not essential
Proven experience of excellent organisational skills and use of initiative, as well as a
resilient personality and the ability to communicate with people on all levels
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate people
Good proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Google Docs is highly desirable.
Geographically mobile (preferably with own vehicle and clean driving license)
Additional Information
This is an unpaid placement, but reasonable expenses will be covered by British Rowing. The
placement will also offer you the following:

 Travel, accommodation and other reasonable expenses paid in order for you to
attend Start Camps






Reasonable flexibility on hours worked, allowing time for further study or work
alongside this role
Sponsorship to achieve level 2 UKCC Coaching Award and RYA Level 2 power boat
driving course
Development of your own career and coaching skills
