COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students learn how to navigate the financial decisions they must face and to make informed decisions
related to career exploration, budgeting, banking, credit, insurance, spending, taxes, saving, investing, buying/leasing a vehicle, living
independently, and inheritance. Development of financial literacy skills and an understanding of economic principles will provide the
basis for responsible citizenship and career success. Instruction in economics and personal finance prepares students to function
effectively as consumers, savers, investors, entrepreneurs, and active citizens. Students learn how economies and markets operate and
how the United States’ economy is interconnected with the global economy. On a personal level, students learn that their own human
capital (knowledge and skills) is their most valuable resource.
OBJECTIVES:
The student will:
 Develop Economic Skills and Knowledge
 Develop Consumer Skills
 Demonstrate Knowledge of Planning for Living and Leisure Expenses
 Demonstrate Knowledge of Banking Transactions
 Demonstrate knowledge of Credit and Loan Functions
 Demonstrate Knowledge of the Role of Insurance in Risk Management
 Demonstrate Knowledge of Income Earning and Reporting
 Demonstrate Knowledge of Taxes
 Demonstrate Knowledge of Personal Financial Planning
 Demonstrate Knowledge of Investment and Savings Planning
 Demonstrate Workplace Readiness Skills
o Personal Qualities and People Skills
o Professional Knowledge and Skills
o Technology Knowledge and Skills
o Examine All Aspects of Industry
 Be strongly encouraged to participate/compete as an active member of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). This is
an organization for business students.
Materials: Three-ring binder, loose leaf notebook paper, ruler, pencil and pen (black), flash drive, financial or scientific calculator.
Course Requirements:
 Students are expected to adhere to the Student Code of Conduct/Handbook.
 Students are to bring required materials to class each day.
 Students are to turn in assignments on time.
 Projects will be assigned throughout the semester.
 Quizzes (announced and unannounced) will be given to students on a regular basis.

Any work missed due to absences must be made up in the time indicated in the student handbook.
The use of the computer is a privilege. Students must adhere to the Acceptable Computer Use Agreement and may not
download material or check e-mail unless prior permission has been granted by the instructor.
Attendance is mandatory. The attendance regulations as stated in the Prince Edward County High School Student Code of
Conduct/Handbook will be followed. If a student has been absent from class or is tardy to class, he/she is expected to bring
an admittance slip.
Students are to respect other students. There should be no talking while the teacher or another student is talking to the class.
Students are not to hit or touch other students.
