A MS Excel calculation sheet developed in-house at
LiU is used as a reference for the aircraft’s
characteristics. An iterative process ensures that the
conceptual idea of the aircraft meets the necessary
requirements and airworthiness.
The RAPID interface is used as a hub between the
calculation sheet and the CAD software. The
generated CAD model in CATIA is parametric .
Further functional and aesthetic changes are made to
the model within the CAD software. Components
such as winglets, landing gears, cabin and cargo
doors, windshields and windows are added manually.
Basic design guidelines includes implementation of simple
solutions that ensure manufacturing feasibility and good
flight characteristics. The commonality index of the used
components is kept at a very minimum which makes it
more applicable for a low cost production.
The H-type tail design is mostly driven by the engine
placement which is at rear end of the passenger cabin for
structural and balance reasons. Low cruising speeds pose
no need for a swept-back wing or a super-critical airfoil
and cruising altitude makes pressurization not necessary
and reduces structural weight even further.
Important features include a spacious cargo area, short
landing and take off distance, retractable landing gear, low
risk of foreign object ingestion, better cockpit field of
vision, twin access doors for the cabin, dimensional
compatibility with general hangars.
