Eastern Mediterranean
(Turkey, Syria, Lebanon Israel, Jordan)
• Much of the Eastern Mediterranean area
has a dry, mostly desert or steppe climate.
Limited resources such as water and land,
are important to the region’s people.
• The Dardanelles, Bosporus, and the Sea
of Marmara make up a narrow waterway
connecting the Black Sea to the
Mediterranean Sea. Divides the city of
Istanbul, Turkey between Europe and
Asia.

• Rivers and Lakes
– Jordan River
– Dead Sea – contains little life, only bacteria,
world’s saltiest lake, 1,312 feet below sea
level (lowest point on any continent)
• Mountains and Plains
– Pontic and Taurus Mountains
– Plateaus, hills, and valleys are father inland.
• Syrian Desert is mostly rock and gravel
and receives less than 5” rain annually.

• Home to the largest sand desert in the
world: Rub’-al-Khali - means “empty
quarter” because little life exists here.
• Surrounded by bodies of water: Persian
Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, Red
Sea, and Caspian Sea.

• Region contains four main landforms:
rivers, plains, plateaus, and mountains.
• Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are known
as exotic rivers, or rivers that begin in
humid regions and then flow to dry areas.

• Iran is one of the world’s most
mountainous countries.
• Mountain ranges: Zagros, Elburz, KopetDag
• Historically, mountains have been a
barrier, isolating towns and helping them
control their territories.

• Southern deserts are sandy and northern
deserts are covered with volcanic rock.
• Desert can be mostly hot and cold. 100+
degrees during day and below freezing at
night.

• Rainfall supports vegetation in some parts of
the region.
• Trees are common in mountain regions and
scattered desert oases.
– An oasis is a wet, fertile area in a desert that forms
where underground water bubbles to the surface.
• Water is one of the region’s most valuable
resources but is very scarce.
• Springs provide water.
• Wadis – dry streambeds, wells are dug to reach the
water underground
North Africa
• Region that stretches from the Atlantic
Ocean to the Red Sea and south of the
Mediterranean Sea.
• Nile River – world’s longest river, fans out
near the Mediterranean Sea to form a
large delta.
• Sinai Peninsula – covered by barren,
rocky mountains and desert
• Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean
Sea with the Red Sea.
North Africa
• Sahara Desert – largest in the world, few
people live here, small settlements are
located near a water source such as an
oasis.
• Atlas Mountains
• The climate is mostly hot and dry. At night
it can get cold. There is little rain, but
flooding can occur.
