MINUTES September 25, 2009 In attendance: Rasheeda Ayanru, Momodou Darboe, David Gordon, Linda Kinney, Alan McDonald, Rachel Ritterbusch 1. The minutes of the September 18 meeting were approved. 2. The Committee continued the discussion of the Foundations section. a. Section A of Foundations: The Committee decided, for the moment, to let International Studies majors choose between ECON 123 and ECON 205, as the current Shepherd General Studies allows. ii. The Committee discussed the whether or not International Studies majors should be allowed to take History and Literature courses from the distant past. The Committee decided that Linda Kinney would organize an on-line/electronic vote on the following motion: “International Studies majors will be allowed to take History and Literature courses from any historical period.” iii. The Committee voted in favor of requiring International Studies majors to take HIST 103 The Modern World. However, IS majors would be allowed to choose among the remaining options in the History section of the current Shepherd General Studies, pending the outcome of the electronic vote (see ii above). i. b. Section C of Foundations: The Committee decided to require that all majors take ANTH 203 Introduction to Anthropology and PSCI 324 International Relations. ii. Anthropology 315, BADM 359, and SOCI 307 were left in as choices. iii. ENVS 202 Dimensions of Environmental Science II was listed as one of the choices. Dr. Ed Snyder, chair of Environmental Studies, indicated that it was more focused on the social and policy aspects of environmental problems than ENVR 201. iv. The other components of Section C will be discussed next week. i. 3. The current composition of the Foundations section is as follows (changes made this week in bold italics). Section A: Courses in Shepherd University General Studies where students have a choice. International studies majors must choose the following: ENGL 209 World Literature II (ENGL 208 is too far back?) (3 credits) HIST 103 The Modern World (HIST 101 is too far back?) (6 credits) PSCI 100 Politics and Government (3 credits) Foreign Language (12 credits) Section B: Other Courses in Shepherd General Studies: ECON 123 or ECON 205 (provides foundations for international studies) (3 credits) MUSC 111 (provides foundations for international studies) ART 103 (provides foundations for international studies) COMM 202 Science Math SOCI 203 (provides foundations for international studies) Fitness for Life Section C: International Studies Core (24 credits): Introduction to International Studies (3 credits) Capstone (3 credits) 15 credits GEOG 100 World Regions (3 credits) ANTH 203 Introduction to Anthropology (3 credits) PSCI 324 International Relations (3 credits) Not yet discussed 4. Choose three (3) of: (9 credits) ANTH 315 Cultural Anthropology BADM 359 International Business SOCI 307 Demography ENVS 202 Dimensions of Environmental Science II Additional English? (Department suggested ENGL 313 Literature in English since 1900 which deals with 20th century lit from western and eastern countries. However, there is a prereq for all upper level English courses, ENGL 301 Intro to Literary Studies, required of all English majors) Additional Art and Music?
