Alan McDonald, Rachel Ritterbusch
1.
The minutes of the September 18 meeting were approved.
2.
The Committee continued the discussion of the Foundations section.
a.
Section A of Foundations:
The Committee decided, for the moment, to let International
Studies majors choose between ECON 123 and ECON 205, as the
current Shepherd General Studies allows.
ii.
The Committee discussed the whether or not International Studies
majors should be allowed to take History and Literature courses
from the distant past. The Committee decided that Linda Kinney
would organize an on-line/electronic vote on the following motion:
“International Studies majors will be allowed to take History and
Literature courses from any historical period.”
iii.
The Committee voted in favor of requiring International Studies
majors to take HIST 103 The Modern World. However, IS majors
would be allowed to choose among the remaining options in the
History section of the current Shepherd General Studies, pending
the outcome of the electronic vote (see ii above).
i.
b.
Section C of Foundations:
The Committee decided to require that all majors take ANTH 203
Introduction to Anthropology and PSCI 324 International
Relations.
ii.
Anthropology 315, BADM 359, and SOCI 307 were left in as
choices.
iii.
ENVS 202 Dimensions of Environmental Science II was listed as
one of the choices. Dr. Ed Snyder, chair of Environmental Studies,
indicated that it was more focused on the social and policy aspects
of environmental problems than ENVR 201.

The other components of Section C will be discussed next week.
