Network Protocol:~
 N/w Protocol is defined as rules or communication formats
which have been agreed by communication device
This defines




Addressing method
Data format
Reliability
Speed of communication

Ethernet
Token Ring
Fiber Distributed data Interface
 Middle-layer Protocol
 TCP/IP
 IPX/SPX
 NETBEUI
 Higher-layer Protocol
 HTTP
 FTP
 SMTP

L0wer Layer Protocol: This operate at the physical and data link layer of OSI reference
layer and perform following Functions
1) Transmitting data
2) Ensure data transmission
3) Media Access to the Device
 Following Protocol are
1) ARC NET
2) Ethernet

ARC NET: Attached resource computer network
 Developed in 1970 by an organization called data point
 Speed at starting was 156 kbps to 2.5 Mbps. And now it gives
10Mbps
 This uses Token ring Scheme
 This consist of an frame format which has three Parts
1) Header
2) Data
3) Trailer

CRC
Main Feature of ARC net: ARC net Support Co-Axial and Twisted pair cables
 Support star bus and ring topologies
 This uses token passing system which prevent collusion
Limitation of ARC net:




Maximum frame size is 508 bytes
ACK is required for every frame
Maximum number of node in single ARC net is 255
Maximum speed is 10Mbps

Ethernet: Most Popular LAN Protocol developed in 1972 in Xerox Palo
Alto research Center (PARC)
 This uses a technique called CSMA/CD which is even
known as 802.3
 Carrier is a signal containing some specific data
 Device needs data then it check cable for any signal
 If multiple device access the signal simultaneously through
medium
 Device near to the point detect and inform all device about
collusion
