Skin Cancer and Leukemia Aaron Pagan May 2, 2014 Introduction Boom! Have you heard of the bomb that the United States dropped on Hiroshima at the end of World War II?That was called the atomic bomb. It put radiation through the air that caused leukemia. Leukemia is a type of cancer I’m teaching you about. Leukemia is a disease caused by radiation and can be caused by other things too. Imagine a patient at the doctor's office asking the doctor, What is this mark on my skin?” The doctor says, “I’m afraid that’s skin cancer.” Skin cancer is another type of cancer I'm also i'm going to be teaching you about. Types of Leukemia There are types of things just like there are types of leukemia. There are three types of leukemia: Acute lymphocytic, Acute myelogenous, and Hybrid or Mixed lineage. Acute lymphocytes starts from the lymphoid cells in the main bone marrow. Acute myelogenous starts from the myeloid cells that form white blood cells.Hybrid or mixed lineage are very rare types of leukemias that form in human life. The big thing I learned here was what are the types of leukemias and where they form in the human body. Leukemia Symptoms If you’re going through the symptoms of leukemia, you might go through body changes. Here are the the symptoms of leukemia: fever or chills, persistent weakness, trick infections and losing weight without trying, swollen lymph nodes, enlarged liver or spleen, easy bleeding or bruising, no appetite, gum problems, fatigue, pale skin, headache, seizures, and vomiting. This makes me think through out all the cancers leukemia must have the worst symptom of all cancers total. Leukemia Diagnosis If you have leukemia you might have to get checked up a lot like a check up at the doctors. On the other hand, leukemia is way different from a routine check up at the doctor. Here is how a doctor diagnoses a patient with leukemia. One way is a bone marrow biopsy. For a leukemia bone marrow biopsy a thick hollow needle is used to take a sample of the bone marrow. A spinal tap is another thing a doctor could do to see if a person has leukemia. For a spinal tap doctors use a needle to remove fluids around spinal area. A chest x­ray is another that shows swollen area. A Blood test is one more way to diagnose leukemia. Lumbar puncture is the last one. This makes me think how many tests and procedures you have to take to get diagnosed. Leukemia Treatment Surgery may be needed. Also removing something may be needed. Here are the treatments for leukemia. One is chemotherapy. Chemo is a treatment with anticancer drugs that are given into the vein. Vincristine (oncovin) daunorubicin (cerubidine) cytarabine (cytosar) are all chemo drugs. Radiation is also a treatment. Bone marrow replacement is a more serious kind of leukemia treatment. Stem cell transplant is the last treatment of all. This makes me think about how recovery will be These are my sections for leukemia. I hope this means a lot to all the people who read this but it’s not over yet. Now to skin cancer. Types of Skin Cancer There are types of things and types of cancers, but this is about types of skin cancer. There are three types of skin cancer: nonmelanoma is a skin cancer that is more easily treated by doctors. That is the first type of skin cancer. The second type of skin cancer is malignant melanoma. It is a skin cancer that is the dangerous type and the one that spreads faster. The last type of skin cancer is pediatric melanoma a type that children develop. This tells what are the types of skin cancers. Skin Cancer Causes Here are the causes of skin cancer: 90% of all skin cancers come from the sun’s uv rays, chemical exposure causes cancer, tanning beds also known as ‘fake bake “ cause skin cancer, immune system problems cause skin cancer, sunburn, and radiation exposure all cause skin cancer. This tells me what i need to do to not cause skin cancer Skin Cancer Treatment You may only have one big option for skin cancer treatment. Here are the treatments for skin cancer. Surgery depending on what type of skin cancer it is and where it is. Laser eye surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy,moh’s surgery a treatment that usually take place in the affected spot. Here are some after treatment tips. Keep the surgery spot clean and go to the emergency room if you are in serious pain. You may also need to do follow up care. This makes me think how long therapy and recovery will be. History of Skin Cancer Many doctors have helped us over the years to understand skin cancer. Here are the theories for the history of skin cancer: the lymph theory by doctors to say that all skin cancers started in the lymphocytes in 1600. Blastema theory by a german doctor was in 1830, but soon his research failed. The chronic irritation trauma theory by Dr. Virchow which also failed in the 1800s. Now we know that most skin cancer comes from exposure to the sun’s UV rays. This makes me realize how much people fail even by trying hard But curing a disease is so important even after people keep failing. Conclusion Studying leukemia and skin cancer is important because it helps people understand what to do for treatment and diagnosis.It also tells people what not to do that might cause one of these diseases.
