Accelerated Grade 7 Mathematics
Unit 3: Statistics, Probability, & Transformations
In order for your child to be successful, it is important to be consistent with the mathematical
vocabulary and processes that will be implemented this year in eighth grade. You may find this
resource helpful when supporting your child at home.
Unit Concepts
Concept
Explanation
Similar
Similar polygons have
angles that are the
same measure, shapes
that are the same,
and side lengths that
are proportional
Transformation
Congruent
Theoretical
Probability
Examples
and
are similar because they are
the same shape, the corresponding (matching)
angles have the same measure, and the sides are
proportional; all sides on
are 2 times the
length of the corresponding sides on
Translation- sliding a figure
Rotation- turning a figure
Reflection- making a mirror image
Dilation- enlarging or reducing a figure
Manipulating a figure
by translations,
rotations, reflections,
and/or dilations
Same size and same
shape. Congruent
polygons have angles
that are the same
measure, shapes that
and
are congruent because they are
are the same, and side
the same shape, same size and the corresponding
lengths that are
(matching) angles have the same measure.
proportional.
The ratio of the
number of favorable
outcomes to the
number of total
possible outcomes

A drawer has 4 blue socks and 2 white socks.
The theoretical probability of pulling a white
sock out is 2 out of 6 or 1/3 or 33.3%

Outliers
Data that is
significantly
higher or lower
than the rest of
the data; data
that doesn’t fit
the trend
Proportional
relationships
Two quantities
are proportional
if they vary in
such a way that
one of them is a
constant multiple
of the other
Image
A figure or
polygon after a
transformation or
series of
transformations
was performed
Pre-image
A figure or
polygon before a
transformation or
series of
transformations
was performed
(the original
figure)
Parallel lines
Lines are parallel
if they lie in the
same plane, and
are the same
distance apart
over their entire
length. They will
never intersect

Test scores from Mr. Fallen’s class are 34, 67, 72, 76,
80, 84, 88, 91, 93. The score of 34 may be considered an
outlier because it is significantly lower than other
scores.
Average daily temperatures in Daytona, Florida in
March were 76, 80, 78, 78, 82, 81, 98. The temperature
of 98 is an outlier because it didn’t fit the trend of
temperatures.
If a person earns $12 per hour (before taxes), the
equation y=12x models this proportional relationship.
The graph of a proportional relationship passes
through the origin (0,0).
(pre-image) was transformed by performing a
rotation and dilation to get
(image).
was
rotated 90 and dilated with a scale factor of 2.

Reflection
Transformation
that flips a figure
over a line of
reflection
Rotation
Transformation
that turns a figure
about a fixed
point, called the
center of rotation
Translation
Transformation
that moves points
the same distance
and in the same
direction
Dilation
Translation that
results in a size
change
Experimental
Probability
The ratio of the
number of
favorable
outcomes to the
number of total
possible trials
after performing
an experiment

After flipping a coin 20 times, Bob got 12 heads and 8
tails. The experimental probability of getting heads is
12 out of 20 or 12/20 or 3/5 or 60%
