Performance in Classroom & Interaction with students outside
classroom:
A. Special education projects undertaken:
1. New classes created—Auditioning, Theatre Management, Stage Movement, Period
Styles of Acting, Acting Theories, Media Performance, Acting Workshop, Acting Shakespeare, Performing
in Musicals, Studies in Restoration Theatre & all Graduate level classes individualized for the student.
2. Updated & revised of Theatre Curriculum and degree plans
3. Created, wrote and published the Lamar Theatre Handbook of policies and procedures
for all majors and minors to learn the proper way of producing theatre.
4. Adapted THE ALAMO CAT and TEXAS STATE BIRD PAGEANT books for
productions in the Children’s Theatre class.
5. Advised and coordinated the graduate project that developed into KIDWRITES a class
project each Spring semester. Lamar theatre majors travel to elementary schools and teach a 45 minute
workshop to grade K-5 on how to write the 10 minute play. The classes then submit their plays which we
produce and perform for them and their parents in early May. The original scripts are copied and bound for
each school and student and their work is recognized that evening.
B. Methods and techniques used in teaching and student evaluations:
The majority of undergraduate classes I taught were practical, “hands-on” production
classes which require individualized projects to be presented by each student at least 3-4 times a semester.
After the presentation, the student begins the evaluation process with a self-critique indicating his/her
positive accomplishments and discussing what he/she learned by this particular assignment. The other
students may then comment on the project presentation and express their opinions on the work they have
seen. I add input to the above comments with a more detailed critique with major emphasis placed on the
areas of improvement and need for more work. It is not unusual for me to totally take the project apart and
put it back together to show another approach and result in the form of demonstration.
The majority of graduate classes are one-on-one projects, research and writing
experiences. At the start of the semester, I meet with each student determine the goals for that time period
and help them acquire resources. Working together throughout the semester, we meet regularly to see the
growth of the project and evaluate the work as it progresses. At the end of the semester, the project is
completed, turned in and after we discuss it together, a grade is assigned based on the success of the goals
achieved.
C. Research in teaching field related to classroom teaching:
1. Attends Texas Educational Theatre Association Convention annually for presentation
and attendance at workshops.
2. Attends (whenever possible) the Association for Theatre in Higher Education
Convention in August annually for attendance at specialty workshops for teachers.

THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW
Director/Choreographer
The Directing process requires at least a 6-8 week period of research and development
prior to beginning work with the actors. It is necessary for the director to research the time period
of the play, the environment, character relationships, genre, style and possible conceptual ideas.
After this dramaturgical work is done, the director begins the collaborative work with designers
(many times these are students) to present the playwright’s message to the audience through the
costumes, sets, lighting and sound. As the rehearsals begin for an additional 6-8 week period, the
teaching process goes into full force as the director “teaches” the actors the process of developing
the character histories through psychological, sociological choices and physical characteristics. In
educational theatre, we are “process-oriented” not “product-oriented”. It is the growth of the actor
in the rehearsal and performance period that is evaluated each evening by the director. After the
production closes, it is not over. We then go into a “post-mortem” discussion regarding the
successes and problems within the process. It is through all of these elements that the teaching
and learning is achieved.
