of ending slavery.

He had been a slave and wrote a book about his life. This let
people see what slavery really was like. He started an antislavery newspaper called the North Star. He was a very good
speaker and became very well known. He helped encourage
African-Americans to enlist in the Union army and was
influential in many other important decisions and causes.
