Geology and Topography of the Continents
Geologists use the term continent in a different manner from geographers, where a
continent is defined by continental crust: a platform of metamorphic and igneous rock,
largely of granitic composition. Some geologists restrict the term 'continent' to portions of
the crust built around stable Precambrian "shield", typically 1.5 to 3.8 billion years old,
called a craton. The craton itself is an accretionary complex of ancient mobile belts
(mountain belts) from earlier cycles of subduction, continental collision and break-up from
plate tectonic activity. An outward-thickening veneer of younger, minimally deformed
sedimentary rock covers much of the craton.
The margins of geologic continents are characterized by currently active or relatively
recently active mobile belts and deep troughs of accumulated marine or deltaic sediments.
Beyond the margin, there is either a continental shelf and drop off to the basaltic ocean
basin or the margin of another continent, depending on the current plate-tectonic setting of
the continent. A continental boundary does not have to be a body of water. Over geologic
time, continents are periodically submerged under large epicontinental seas, and
continental collisions result in a continent becoming attached to another continent. The
current geologic era is relatively anomalous in that so much of the continental areas are
"high and dry" compared to much of geologic history.[citation needed]

Metamorphic Rock
Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock types, in a process
called metamorphism, which means "change in form". The original rock (protolith) is
subjected to heat and pressure, (temperatures greater than 150 to 200 °C and pressures of
1500 bars[1]) causing profound physical and/or chemical change. The protolith may be
sedimentary rock, igneous rock or another older metamorphic rock.
Metamorphic rocks make up a large part of the Earth's crust and are classified by texture
and by chemical and mineral assemblage (metamorphic facies). They may be formed
simply by being deep beneath the Earth's surface, subjected to high temperatures and the
great pressure of the rock layers above it. They can form from tectonic processes such as
continental collisions, which cause horizontal pressure, friction and distortion. They are
also formed when rock is heated up by the intrusion of hot molten rock called magma
from the Earth's interior. The study of metamorphic rocks (now exposed at the Earth's
surface following erosion and uplift) provides information about the temperatures and
pressures that occur at great depths within the Earth's crust. Some examples of
metamorphic rocks are gneiss, slate, marble, schist, and quartzite.

Igenous Rock
Igneous rock (derived from the Latin word ignis meaning fire) is one of the three main
rock types, the others being sedimentary and metamorphic rock. Igneous rock is formed
through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava. Igneous rock may form with or
without crystallization, either below the surface as intrusive (plutonic) rocks or on the
surface as extrusive (volcanic) rocks. This magma can be derived from partial melts of preexisting rocks in either a planet's mantle or crust. Typically, the melting is caused by one or
more of three processes: an increase in temperature, a decrease in pressure, or a change
in composition. Over 700 types of igneous rocks have been described, most of them
having formed beneath the surface of Earth's crust.as continental collisions, which cause
horizontal pressure, friction and distortion. They are also formed when rock is heated up by
the intrusion of hot molten rock called magma from the Earth's interior.

Major Plateaus of the World
.
The largest and highest plateau in the world is the Tibetan Plateau, called the "roof of the
world", which is still being formed by the collisions of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian
tectonic plates. In all, the Tibetan plateau covers an area of some 2.5 million square
kilometres, approximately 5000 m above sea level. The height of this plateau is such that it
is enough to reverse the Hadley cell convection cycles and to drive the monsoons of India
towards the south.

Bogotá, Colombia is located in a high plateau, over 8,600 ft (2,600 m) high
The second-largest current plateau in the world is the Antarctic Plateau, which covers most
of the central part of Antarctica. In that region of Antarctica, there are no known mountains,
but rather 3000 meters or more of ice - which very slowly spreads toward the coastline via
enormous glaciers. This ice cap is so massive that echolocation sound measurements of
the thickness of the ice have shown that large parts of the "dry land" surface of Antarctica
have been pressed below sea level. Thus, if the icecap were somehow removed, large
areas of Antarctica would be flooded by the oceans. On the other hand - more realistically
- were the icecap to gradually melt away, the surface of the land beneath it would gradually
rebound away from the center of the Earth, and that land would ultimately rise above sea
level.
The third-largest plateau in the world is probably the one in South America that lies in the
middle of the Andes Mountains. This Andean Plateau covers most of Bolivia, central Peru,
northern Chile and northern Argentina. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plateau)

Major Plateaus of North America
In North America, the largest plateau is the Colorado Plateau covering an area of about
[1]
337,000 square kilometres (130,000 sq mi) in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico.
The Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona and southern Utah is bisected by the valley of
the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. How this came to be is that over 10 million
years ago, a river was already there, though not necessarily on exactly the same course.
Then, subterranean geological forces caused the land in that part of North America to
gradually rise by about a centimeter per year for millions of years. An unusual balance
occurred: the river that would become the Colorado River was able to erode into the crust
of the Earth at a nearly equal rate to the uplift of the plateau. Now, millions of years later,
the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is at an elevation of about 2450 meters (9800 ft)
above sea level, and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is about 2150 meters (8200 ft)
above sea level. At its deepest, the Colorado River is about 1830 meters (6000 ft) below
the level of the North Rim.
The southern edge of the plateau in northern Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim, where
the elevation of the land declines steeply into central Arizona. This Mogollon Rim is located
about 20 kilometers south Flagstaff, Holbrook, Winslow, and Williams, Arizona. Because of
the snowy plateau and the San Francisco Mountains to its north, the Mogollon Rim area is
noted for its many natural springs and artesian wells.
The second-largest current plateau in the world is the Antarctic Plateau, which covers most
of the central part of Antarctica. In that region of Antarctica, there are no known mountains,
but rather 3000 meters or more of ice - which very slowly spreads toward the coastline via

the thickness of the ice have shown that large parts of the "dry land" surface of Antarctica

level.
The third-largest plateau in the world is probably the one in South America that lies in the

Theory of Continental Formation - Plate Tectonics
Surface
Systems
Plate tectonics (from the Late Latin tectonicus, from the Greek: τεκτονικός "pertaining to
[1]
buildPing") is a scientific theory that describes the large-scale motions of Earth's
lithosphere. The theory builds on the concepts of continental drift, developed during the
first decades of the 20th century. It was accepted by the geoscientific community after the
concepts of seafloor spreading were developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The lithosphere is broken up into tectonic plates. On Earth, there are seven or eight major
plates (depending on how they are defined) and many minor plates. Where plates meet,
their relative motion determines the type of boundary: convergent, divergent, or transform.
Earthquakes, volcanic activity, mountain-building, and oceanic trench formation occur
along these plate boundaries. The lateral relative movement of the plates typically varies
[2]
from zero to 100 mm annually.
Tectonic plates are composed of oceanic lithosphere and thicker continental lithosphere,
each topped by its own kind of crust. Along convergent boundaries, subduction carries
plates into the mantle; the material lost is roughly balanced by the formation of new
(oceanic) crust along divergent margins by seafloor spreading. In this way, the total
surface of the globe remains the same. This prediction of plate tectonics is also referred to
as the conveyor belt principle. Earlier theories (that still have some supporters) proposed
[3]
gradual shrinking (contraction) or gradual expansion of the globe.
Tectonic plates are able to move because the Earth's lithosphere has a higher strength
and lower density than the underlying asthenosphere. Lateral density variations in the
mantle result in convection. Their movement is thought to be driven by a combination of
the motion of seafloor away from the spreading ridge (due to variations in topography and
density of the crust that result in differences in gravitational forces) and drag, downward
suction, at the subduction zones. A different explanation lies in different forces generated
by the rotation of the globe and tidal forces of the Sun and the Moon. The relative
importance of each of these factors is unclear, and is still subject to debate (see also
below).

Continental islands are bodies of land that lie on the continental shelf of a continent.
Examples include Greenland , Long Island and Sable Island off North America ;
Barbados and Trinidad off South America ; Great Britain , Ireland, and Sicily off
Europe ; Sumatra, Borneo and Java off Asia ; and New Guinea, Tasmania and
Kangaroo Island off Australia.
A special type of continental island is the Microcontinental island, which results
when a continent is rifted. Examples are Madagascar and Socotra off Africa ; New
Zealand ; New Caledonia ; the Kerguelen Islands ; and some of the Seychelles .
.
Another subtype is an island or bar formed by deposition of tiny rocks
where a water current loses some of its carrying capacity. An example is barrier
islands which are accumulations of sand deposited by sea currents on the
continental shelf. Another example is islands in river deltas or in large rivers.
Barrier islands, a coastal landform and a type of barrier system, are relatively narrow
strips of sand that parallel the mainland coast.
They usually occur in chains, consisting of anything from a few Islands to more than a
dozen.

Oceanic islands are ones that do not sit on continental shelves. The vast
majority are volcanic in origin. The few oceanic islands that are not volcanic
are tectonic in origin and arise where plate movements have lifted up the
deep ocean floor to above the surface. Examples of this include Saint Peter
and Paul Rocks in the Atlantic Ocean and Macquarie Island in the Pacific.
One type of volcanic oceanic island is found in a volcanic island arc. These
islands arise from volcanoes where the subduction of one plate under
another is occurring. Examples include the Mariana Islands, the Aleutian
Islands and most of Tonga in the Pacific Ocean. Some of the Lesser Antilles
and the South Sandwich Islands are the only Atlantic Ocean examples.
Another type of volcanic oceanic island occurs where an oceanic rift reaches
the surface. There are two examples: Iceland , which is the world's second
largest volcanic island, and Jan Mayen — both are in the Atlantic.

NOAA Ocean Explorer: Northwestern Hawaiian Islands 2002
A third type of volcanic oceanic island is formed over volcanic hotspots.
A hotspot is more or less stationary relative to the moving tectonic plate above it, so a
chain of islands results as the plate drifts. Over long periods of time, this type of
island is eventually "drowned" by isostatic adjustment and eroded, becoming a
seamount. Plate movement across a hot-spot produces a line of islands oriented in
the direction of the plate movement. An example is the Hawaiian Islands, from Hawaii
to Kure, which then extends beneath the sea surface in a more northerly direction as
the Emperor Seamounts.
Another chain with similar orientation is the Tuamotu Archipelago; its older, northerly
trend is the Line Islands. The southernmost chain is the Austral Islands, with its
northerly trending part the atolls in the nation of Tuvalu. Tristan da Cunha is an
example of a hotspot volcano in the Atlantic Ocean. Another hot spot in the Atlantic is
the island of Surtsey, which was formed in 1963.
An atoll is an island formed from a coral reef that has grown on an eroded and

submerged volcanic island. The reef rises to the surface of the water and forms a new
island. Atolls are typically ring-shaped with a central lagoon. Examples include the
Maldives in the Indian Ocean and Line Islands in the Pacific.
Tropical islands
See also: Formation of coral reefs
[7]
There are approximately 45,000 tropical islands on Earth. Among coral tropic islands
for example are Maldives, Tonga, Nauru and Polynesia.[7] Granite islands include
Seychelles and Tioman.[7] The socio-economic diversity of these regions ranges from
the Stone Age societies in the interior of Madagascar, Borneo or Papua New Guinea
to the high-tech lifestyles of the city-islands of Singapore and Hong Kong.
International tourism is a significant factor in the local economy of Seychelles, Sri
Lanka, Mauritius,
Réunion,
Hawaii and
the Maldives, among others.
