William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar
Act II- Conflict
Using the pathfinders and helpful websites, please research the following information about
ancient Rome. In your lesson, you will address this historical content and explain/analyze the
historical accuracy of Shakespeare’s tragedy.
Research the following:
1. What are the origins of the Roman Senate? What was the role of the Senate? How
much power and “say” did the Senators have? How were they chosen?
2. Ancient Roman beliefs in “soothsayers,” fortune-telling, the gods, and “omens”
3. The circumstances of Caesar’s reign- important events, the state of Rome under him,
etc.
4. Define “coup D’etat.” What are two examples of this occurrence in other areas of
history?
5. The role of aristocratic women in ancient Rome- domestic, social, etc.
