Directions: You will create a children’s book (elementary age reading level) explaining the process of
digestion. Color, picture, and writing required on each page. Story may be fiction or non-fiction as long as you
include the following details.
Cover Page
Give your book a cover page with a title and the name of the author. Include pictures and color to grab a child’s
attention.
Page 1: Introduction
Write a simple explanation of digestion. Choose one food to focus on for this story.
Page 2: Mouth
Explain what happens to food in the mouth (mechanical and chemical digestion). What is mastication?
Page 3: Pharynx
Explain how the pharynx helps to move food through the GI tract. What is deglutition?
Page 4: Esophagus
Explain what the job of the esophagus is. What is peristalsis?
Page 5: Stomach
Explain what happens to food in the stomach. What is segmentation? Where do the different digestive juices
come from?
Page 6: Small Intestine
Explain what occurs in the small intestine (chemical digestion). What does the food that you chose get broken
down into? Talk about and illustrate what microvilli are.
Page 7: Large Intestine
Explain what the large intestine does.
Page 8: Summary
Summarize all the steps of digestion.
Page 9: About the author
Explain who you are. Give some information about yourself (100 words minimum).
Extra credit given for: pop-up book, obvious extra time and effort, etc.
