2016 To future AP Human Geography student, Welcome to APHG! AP stands for Advanced Placement – it is a college level course which can earn you college credit. It will indeed be challenging, and you will be expected to take more responsibility than others in your grade (it is the only AP course offered to 9th graders at William Penn High School). But, it will also be very rewarding and a great, unique experience. You will learn about the inner workings and problems of the modern world, and will be taken across many different landscapes, cultures, and human perspectives. Before the first day of school, you are responsible for completing the following:  The attached APHG Summer Assignment – 3 Part packet.  Purchase the Kaplan AP Human Geography 2017 (Kaplan Test Prep Book) ‐ available online or in book stores. You do not have to have the latest version—2015 & 2016 versions will all work just as well and are usually cheaper. This is not required, but highly recommended.  Sign‐up for our class Remind (parents are welcome to sign up as well) for announcements: text @heinaphg to the number 81010  Download the Schoology app to your phone. We will be using Schoology extensively during the year. If you or your parents/guardians have any questions, issues, problems, etc., please e‐mail me at [email protected], or send me a message through the class Remind app. I hope you come to class next year with an open mind and an eagerness to begin learning. Enjoy your summer, and I look forward to meeting you in August! Mr. Hein WPHS Social Studies AP Human Geography Teacher [email protected] 302‐323‐2825 ext. 1210 APHG Summer Assignment – 3 Part Packet Directions In advance of the beginning of this course in August, you must complete an assignment that will give you the foundational knowledge necessary for all units of Human Geography. The tasks in this assignment will help you build essential background information. It will familiarize you the world map, including a few examples of countries in each region, and will also introduce you to some geographic terminology that will show up again and again throughout the course. A major part of being an AP student is the ability to think independently, and solve challenges on your own. You will have to use your own sources of information for much of this assignment – do your best, and try to work through any hurdles or problems you hit along the way. Do not give up if you cannot find something – try to solve it on your own. If you cannot, then you should e‐mail me over the summer, and I will gladly help you. Simply not completing the assignment because it is difficult is not acceptable! If there is will, there is a way, and you must have be willing to accept the challenge to be in an AP course. There are 3 parts to this assignment. Part 1: Reference Maps – Follow the directions noted on each map. These maps will be referenced all the time throughout the year. You need to know not only the continents of the world, but also the regions within each of the continents. You can find maps to help you in any atlas, or through some quick Google searching. Be sure to label and identify everything in the directions. Part 2: Country Facts – This chart will be used to collect some basic information on examples of countries. For each region noted in the chart, pick any 2 countries. Use the internet (The CIA World Fact book website is a great resource!) to find some basic facts about the countries of your choosing. Take a look at the example already completed for the United States. Part 3: Background Vocabulary – For the final part, you will be taking some basic notes. I would recommend purchasing the Kaplan review book for this, as all of the information you need is in the 3rd chapter of that book. If you cannot purchase the Kaplan book, all of this information is available on the internet as well. You will be tested on this information within the first week of school in the form of an open‐
note quiz. You will be allowed to use your completed Summer Assignment packet on this quiz. Name:______________________________________________ APHG REFERENCE MAPS – SUMMER ASSIGNMENT PART 1
