Guided Notes for Mesopotamian Art
Sumerian Art 3500-2030 BC
The __________________ inhabited the southern part of Mesopotamia. The most famous piece of art
from the Sumerians at the time is a group of __________________ figures found at Nippur. They are facing
frontward and holding hands in a act of piety. They have __________________ faces and luxurious beards.
Their __________________ are often inlaid with black __________________, shells, and sparkling blue lapis
lazuli (a semi-precious stone). Most art from the Sumerians is very ornate and inlaid with gold and silver.
Akkad 2340-2180 BC
Akkad was created when several of the __________________of Sumeria combined. Art surviving from
this brief period of time is rare. What survived are scads of __________________ seals carved into semiprecious stones. The scenes depicted are vivid and many show deities __________________ mythical
creatures. Museums today will __________________ the seals in plaster to display the crisp imprints of the
seals.
Lagash 2230-2150 BC
During this time period in the city-state of Lagash, a governor named __________________ is ruling.
He must have been an art lover because every statue found is of him. In these sculptures, he is sitting or
standing with his hands clasped, and his __________________ cloak hanging off of one shoulder. He is
depicted wearing a perfectly cylindrical __________________ fur cap, possibly to mark his position as
governor. His facial expression is placid, meaning not easily upset or excited. His looks give the illusion of
having __________________ over life and death. His eyes are large and vivid representing how observant he
was. On his robe there are __________________ (wedge shape cuts on clay tablets) inscriptions that proclaim
his greatness over and over again. The material the statues are made of is a jet-black diorite that is so tough
that __________________can hardly penetrate it.
Assyria 1000-612 BC
The Assyrian style is pompous and inflated. It is best seen in the massive __________________
carvings that decorate the palace walls. These are __________________t reliefs that mostly depict the
Lamassu, a winged bull with bearded human faces and five legs. These reliefs were excavated in what is now
Iraq in the 19th century by Austen Layard. Also found in this time period are __________________ of
cuneiform tablets and tablets confirming the stories written in the Old Testament. The most common
characteristics seen are the __________________, abstract, flat, and __________________ images.
Babylon 612-539 BC
King Nebuchadnezzar II made this dynasty famous in its brief history. King Nebuchadnezzar is
described as being crazed and __________________. Stories of him are found in the bible. The city of
Babylon at this time had gorgeous __________________ lining the streets going to the center of the city. In
the center, there is a great portal called the __________________ Gate. This portal or gate is made of glazed
bricks of blue, black, yellow, and white. Often depicted in the bricks are striding lions, __________________,
and dragons.
