Doctor of Philosophy in Economics The mission of the doctoral program in Economics is to provide an advanced education in economic theory, the development of a rigorous toolkit of mathematical and econometric techniques, and in various research areas in economics. This education allows students to think critically about how to approach the analysis of economic problems and to contribute to the knowledge base of the discipline. Located north of downtown Dallas in the suburb of Richardson, UT Dallas is home to over 21,000 students and a world-class faculty. The objective of the PhD program is to provide students with a cutting-edge education in micro- and macroeconomic theories, the development of a rigorous toolkit of mathematical and econometric techniques, and extensive exposure to various research areas in economics. Graduates of the PhD program will be prepared for careers in academics as well as for research-oriented positions in the private and public sectors. To earn the PhD in Economics, students must: (1) earn a minimum of 75 graduate semester credit hours beyond the Bachelor’s degree, (2) complete core courses with an average GPA of 3.0 (3) pass comprehensive exams in micro- and macroeconomic theory and in econometrics (4) submit a research paper by the beginning of the fourth year of study (5) be certified in two economic research areas (6) submit an approved dissertation and (7) be certified in two research areas within the science of Economics. • • • • • • Online Application Baccalaureate degree 3.25 GPA in upper-division and graduate course work GRE scores: the averages for entering students are 163 quantitative and 150 verbal. TA/RA positions are competitive and usually include a tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend during the academic year.
