The origins of cranial nerves in the brain stem (ventral and lateral views). The olfactory (I) nerve is not shown because it terminates in the olfactory bulb in
the forebrain. All of the cranial nerves except one emerge from the ventral surface of the brain; the trochlear (IV) nerve originates from the dorsal surface
of the midbrain.
