CHSWG Action plan:
Objective 1 – Improve Involvement of families with CHSWG
Following the meeting with parent reps, agreed that once CB has received all biographical
information from them it would be placed onto websites and promoted in both audiology
departments. Email address for parent reps to use has been set up; this will be advertised with
their biographies. ([email protected]). JMcM was looking into setting up a regional
training event for CHSWG parent reps.
Objective 2 – Review all care pathways for Deaf children to ensure equity across the county
CB explained the increasing importance of producing this document not only for families and
services, but also for Commissioners, particularly in the light of the forthcoming joint
commissioning of Health, Education and Social care services for children.
DG shared her completed care pathway; it needs further work but is important to have something
to work from. Acknowledged that this is a document that will take time and agreed to circulate the
developing document by email.
Objective 3 – To raise profile of CHSWG with all services at management level and with the
public
CBsuggested targeting HVs and GPs in next year’s Deaf Awareness week, 19-25 May 2014. DG to
contact Toni Wolff about offering deaf awareness training during DA week to Doctors and
trainees.
Objective 4 – to engage with new NHS reforms and with new commissioning pathways
Further meeting about development of paediatric audiology services has been held in London in
September.
CHAC is to be involved in a pilot of a Paediatric Audiology Network. This is a way of trying to
improve quality in services. 4 trial sites are West Midlands, East Midlands, East of England &
London.
CHAC, Kings Mill Hospital, Lincoln, Boston, Burton on Trent, Leicester, Derby are to be included in
our regional network.
This will include providing an annual report of your service to be measured against a set of criteria
(not yet developed!). This will involve local services providing information. Details are as yet
sketchy with further meetings planned in early 2014 to clarify. The aim is to feedback to
commissioners.
Update on Education Health and Care Plan, GF:
This fundamentally alters the tiered approach of School Action, School Action Plus and Statement
of Special Education Needs.
Nottingham County is one of the pilot sites for introducing the EHC plan. It will last until the child
is 25 years old.
It charges Local Authorities to work with health and social care to develop and publish a “local
offer”.
The majority of children will have their needs met by the Local Offer.
Those children whose needs are not met by the local offer, may opt for a EHC Plan.
Example plan attached to minutes
Feedback from Audit of Newly Diagnosed Parents, CB:
Presented findings from postal survey of parents whose child had been through the process of
being diagnosed with a hearing loss. Overall the responses from parents were positive.
Key Recommendations:
 More support from other parents after initial diagnosis
 Develop literature for parents whose children have Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder
 Where possible have TOD at first CHAC appointment
 Ensure first meeting with TOD does not happen in the waiting room
 All Audiologists and Medical Physicists to attend NHSP Breaking the News course
Service Updates:
Children's Hearing Assessment Centre, Nottingham
New hospital-wide Patient Administration Service: go-live 9th November. This will have an impact
on all processes.
All Hearing Aid Reviews are done on a partial booking system- if family doesn’t opt-in twice, they
are discharged although remain on an open referral, Teachers of the Deaf will be copied into any
discharge letter.
Teenage focus day took place in July: involvement of teenagers in developing the transfer from
child to adult services. One change from this is to develop a separate waiting area for teenagers in
the adult department.
They wanted opportunity for meeting other HI teenagers. The Ear Foundation offer a teenagers
forum.

Staffing changes have occurred and there is a reorganisation taking place.

No changes but another re-organisation to a more locality based service is looking likely
