BRCA WHAT? Are you at risk for breast or ovarian cancer?
Women with a high risk of getting cancer of the breast or ovaries usually have a close
relative with one or both of these cancers. If you are one of these women, you may have
Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) syndrome which can be caused by
mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.
BRCA Risk Factor Questionnaire
How to assess your risk:
Breast Cancer at age 50 or younger
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force
(USPTF) recommends the Breast Cancer
Genetics Referral Screening Tool
(B-RST)1 to the left. This assessment
can also be taken electronically at

Ovarian Cancer at any age

1. Please check off all boxes that apply to you
2. Remember to provide thorough answers
3. Review your responses with your doctor. If you have checked off one or more boxes, you may be
at increased risk. You and your doctor will decide if you need further evaluation, and if
testing is right for you.
4. Medical providers can call 866.GENE.INFO for a
genetic consultation and help with test selection.
If you or your doctor would like for you to be
evaluated by a genetic counselor, you can call us
at 866.GENE.INFO and we will get you in contact
with a genetic counseling group that provides
convenient telephone-based counseling sessions.
*B-RST is a screening tool that helps identify people who may have a
strong genetic (hereditary) risk for breast and ovarian cancer due to their
family history. This screening tool is NOT designed to decide who should
get genetic testing for Hereditary Breast/Ovarian Cancer Syndrome
(BRCA genetic testing), but to identify who should be referred to genetic
counseling to better understand their risks and options. The B-RST was
tested in a large group of women, and found to have very good accuracy.
However, as with most screening tools, it will not identify all women who
might be at risk for Hereditary Breast/Ovarian Cancer Syndrome.

Quest Diagnostics is the world’s leading provider of diagnostic information services that patients
and clinicians need to make better health care decisions. We harness the diagnostic insights that
the body reveals through laboratory testing to empower faster treatment, lower costs and favorable
outcomes. More than half a million patients every day – nearly 150 million patient encounters every
year – benefit from our solutions and commitment to creating a healthier world.
If after speaking with your doctor or genetic counselor, you have
been found to be at risk of having Hereditary Breast and Ovarian
Cancer (HBOC) syndrome, Quest Diagnostics offers a test
called BRCAvantage™ to help determine if you have HBOC.
The BRCAvantage™ test uses multiple state-of-the-art technologies to find a mutation
if present. We use a technology called bait tile capture, which reduces potential errors
caused by other techniques and makes our test more than 99% sensitive.2
If something is found that isn’t considered “normal”, we then go through a stringent
process of interpreting what the result means. It is important to understand that not
all findings are associated with increased risk, and many are just normal variations from
person-to-person. We have board-certified directors who review every case, with many
tools at their disposal to determine if what was found by the test increased risk or not.
Some of these tools are public databases of information, many scientific publications,
and prediction and modeling tools.
When the test is completed, the result is sent to your doctor who will inform you of the
results. Once you know your risk, you and your doctor can decide what the next steps
should be. If you are at risk, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk. Taking steps
today can keep you healthy tomorrow and for years to come.
Life has enough mysteries. Don’t let risk of HBOC syndrome be one of them. Take the
assessment today, contact your doctor, decide if testing is right for you, and take control
of your life.
